Know thyself. According to Greek philosopher Socrates, unexamined life is not worth living. Do you think you know yourself, because you know your name? I think not. I do not want to unconditionally dependent on the prejudices and popular trends of my times. I would love to think that my thoughts are being stimulated by the experiences of other people. I would like to see or hear anything that would help me grow as a better human being. Therefore, I will always be continuously assessing myself and improving to be a better leader. A strong leader sets the standard and not caught in hypocrisy. To set a good example, I will need to develop and hold high moral, ethical and, integrity. It is foolish to execute a command if one cannot even understand his own. Having strong integrity in everything I do, will mold my image as an ethical leader who has high moral. Therefore, I can mentor others on what is Wright and wrong by showing my keen judgment, in problem-solving skills and critical thinking ability, without any personal bias. Perception is the reality. Building and leading a cohesive team is not an easy task. Even though my inner introvert will disagree with what I need to do to be an effective leader. I will need to get out of my comfort zone and do the right thing. After all, this is not all about me now. I believe that the amount of luck I seem to have is directly related to the amount of hard work I have put in. Showing a strong work ethic in everything, we do with excellence, will inspire others around me and develop strong moral in the work center, which will significantly improve the mission and personal satisfaction within oneself. Flexibility is a key to success. We need to able adapt to any situation, which may throw at us at any moment and able to bounce back from it. “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way,” as said by John C. Maxwell. This reminds people about what it takes to be a great leader and has raised many controversies as to what a great leader is. Qualities like decisiveness, confidence, focus, and consistency are necessary to make a leader. Virtue, which is a behavior showing high moral standards , is not one of the necessary qualities. By analyzing literature and history, a person can still be a good and effective leader without virtue because they are consistent, credible, and have a vision of their goals.

My time in 4-H, working, volunteering, and my first semester of college have provided me with leadership opportunities and experiences that were often challenging. In order to cope with these challenges, I had to develop skills that would allow me to move forward. The first of which is the ability to work well on a team. This skill is one that I’ve had to practice in many environments such as completing a group project, playing softball, working in food service, and volunteering as a camp counselor.

Each individual has their own values and initiative of a situation. However it is important that those values are clear and justifiable in order to show impeccable courage. Accessing the target goals and final outcome of the situation should always be taken into account, in order to achieve the correct and suitable care. As mentioned before honesty is a key aspect that collaborates with courage. Being honest provides strength to speak out and take action, stepping out of comfort zones, hurdling obstacles and taking risks (Kantor, 2015).

These characteristics are integrity and authenticity; integrity can be defined in many ways, integrity encloses core values like honesty and justice, and it suggests a sense of moral soundness (Lawton & Páez, 2014). Leaders with integrity would do the right thing when nobody is looking, they would demonstrate exemplary moral behavior and they will keep a consistency between laws and codes. The research shows that the coercive and pacesetting styles have a negative correlations on organizational climate while the other four styles have a positive impact. Thus, except for unusual circumstances where coercive and pacesetting styles might be appropriate, leaders should normally use a combination of the authoritative, affiliative, democratic and coaching styles to achieve success. His courage can also be known from the fact that he was not prepared to deal with people who didn’t have the training he did, or the desire to succeed as he did.
