Before having taken this subject I did not have a clear understanding of what grammar really was. This class has helped me understand what grammar is and how important it is for us to know. Even though I have known English all of my life and have practiced it on a daily basis the definition of grammar was not clear to me. Know I feel I have a much better understanding of it and how much of a difference it would have been if I would have had a class focused only on grammar before.
When it comes to learning a language grammar is one of the key components to focus on. But, it is also very important to remember it is only one part of learning a language. It is not only essential to have a clear definition and understanding of what grammar is; we need to understand why it is influential as well. We also need to realize why grammar is taught in schools.
Grammar is the way a language combines and manipulates words in order to form a longer unit that consist of a meaning. It is considered the study of morphology and syntax. Morphology is the system of rules that cover the formation of words. Syntax is the system of rules that cover the formation of sentences. “The whole system and structure of a language or of languages in general, usually taken as consisting of syntax and morphology (including inflections) and sometimes also phonology and semantics.” (Oxford, 2016) Edward Finegan defines grammar as:

In the essay, “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why.” During the interview with the interviewee Kyle Wiens gives he or she a grammar test. If they do well then the interviewee has a chance at getting the job. On the other hand, if they do poorly then they have no chance at getting the job.
My grammar wasn’t up to that level, however, I learned new concepts that would make my paper much better. There were many parts of the paper that I would change after taking this course, but the most important lesson I learned was sentence structure and grammar. According to Dr. Schreier, syntax is the structure of a language, underlying rules of order/function for how words can be combined to form phrases and sentences [Schreier slides]. Semantics is the understanding of words and word combinations. In Genie’s case, she was able to acquire semantics, but not the syntax of English. By listening to the sentences she produced and watching her reactions after receiving simple words from others, we know that she grasped the meaning of many individual words, and could even put them in combinations to convey a simple message. However, arranging the words in a grammatically correct order was something Genie could not achieve.
I hoped that it would be a class that would teach me new techniques for writing. At the same time, I was concerned that I might not learn anything of consequence in the class. I was already aware (from results in other classes) that there were improvements I needed to make in my writing. I was uncertain, however, if this class would help. Now, at the end of the course, I feel that I have improved as a writer and have had a positive experience.
Finally my grammar has improved constantly throughout the course. I was able to see my mistakes and how to fix them when I was able to read my grader’s notes. Altering each of my common mistakes helped me understand how to write with correct grammar. The feedback I would get from the instructors helped to improve my rhetorical analysis paper. I learned to ask for assistance when I encountered a problem.
In my future, I hope to continue the skills I have acquired during this English class. I think that they will be very obliging to me, nevertheless of what I am trying to achieve. In this course, I was encountered with deadlines, instructions, and assignments that I could not work around. I found that all of these responsibilities have made me comprehend that I could definitely take the next step forward in life.

At the start of this course I could barely write a coherent paragraph. I believe that I can now write a passable academic essay. I have grown much more confident in my writing skills. This class has been exceptionally helpful in teaching me how to write properly. I believe that I have gained a lot of useful information from this class.
During the course of this semester, I feel that I have grown substantially as a writer. I think that I could improve even more with practice as well as using a few resources. This class has helped me drastically by improving my writing structure but I think it could have been even better if I had spent my time more efficiently. Overall this class has been very beneficial to me and I think it will really help me in the future. When I started this class I took a completely different approach to writing a paper.
Due to the digital age everything we do is based on writing we communicated through writing with text messages. Grammar is important because it shows your level of professionalism and intelligence. (Wiens) Good Grammar is necessary for every job but especially for jobs that require grammar like reading a writing if your job requires reading and writing than good grammar is very important. Grammar is necessary for any job because now a days the most common methods of communication is text and talking if you speak and write like a two year old no one is going to take you seriously. Linguistics differs from traditional grammar in several basic ways. Linguists are interested that what is said, not ought to be said. They describe language in all its aspects, not prescribe rules of correctness. They regard the spoken language as primary not the written
Taking this class has had a profound impact on me. I have learned how to properly study for a college class. Also, I learned how to effectively communicate and reach out to my professor. This was my first college course which gave me a learning experience about psychology and myself as a student. I have learned how to manage my time, study in ways that are better for me, focus on the task in front of me, and reaching out and taking opportunities.
The art of argument persuasion I’ve learned in this course is so beneficial for my marketing major. Other than that, it made me develop the essay writing skills necessary for success in my studies at the university level. This English course also taught me how powerful written words can be, and how the delivery of the tone is important for the reader. The tone of a narrative is different than the tone of a research, where the difference makes the paper. Also, the power in written words tells how much it is crucial to mankind.
Syntactic rules: They play the role of foundation like how the sentence should be structured. For example, it could grammar, or vowel use in a sentence. Semantic rules: This is the most important rule of language to govern because it gives the word a specific meaning. This way words can be used by most people. Yet, when these rules are used well like people misuse the word or overuse it.
Grammar is a system and structure of language. To me grammar is more than just knowing the rules and standards; it is being able to apply them in writing. Growing up I was taught all of the grammar rules through many grammar worksheets. However, my Pedagogical Grammar class gave me a new outlook on how to teach grammar. I will use strategies learned from my peers, research, experience, and my grammar class to explain how I will teach my students grammar.
