Frederick Douglass is a slave who is motivated to learn to read and write. When he is a child, Douglass’s mistress teaches him the alphabet. As time goes on, his owners realize he is becoming too smart, and they put a stop to his learning. According to Douglass, “If I was in a separate room any considerable length of time, I was sure to be suspected of having a book, and was at once called to an account of myself.” Because of this, Douglass has to sneak in his studying time.
In the essays, “Reading to Write” by Stephen King, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, “Learning to Read” Malcolm X, and “Learning to Write” by Frederick Douglas have three things in common. In each essay Reading has contributed towards the authors life leading to benefit from learning to read, allowing them to leave a legacy behind. In each essay the authors has thought their self how unlike Frederick Douglass. For Stephen King, reading has done a lot for him. King stated, “Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (221).
“If there is no struggle, there is no progress” (Biography.com Editors). Frederick Douglass was a hard worker with all of his tasks, and did not stop until he reached his goal. Many people have reaped the benefits of Frederick Douglass’ hard work in contributing to the Civil Rights Movement. The road to his own freedom and position didn’t come easily, and he impacted lives with his words. His journey and experiences are amazing, as you will soon discover.
Douglass lives in Hugh Auld’s household for about seven years. During this time, he is able to learn how to read and write, from his mistress Mrs. Auld, who no longer taught him, for how cruel she became. Douglass had already learned the alphabet and was determined to learn how to read and write. When he was twelve, Douglass reads a book called The Columbian Orator, which was about a master and a slave. The book helps Douglass to fully understands slavery, and grows to have so much hatred towards it.
Education played a big role in Frederick’s life. Douglass had this great idea where he believed that having an education would help him survive the slave world. As he begins his narrative he introduces himself as a former slave and the son of a white master. He sees how even though he is son to a white male, he is still seen as a slave, uneducated and ignorant. Douglass mentions his narrative that at this point of life he really has no accurate account of his real age.
Frederick Douglass, social reformer, writer, and abolitionist, was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland. His exact birthday remains unknown, but believed to be born around 1818. His mother died when he was around the age of 10, after only seeing her a few times. At this young age, he was chosen to work in the home of a plantation owner, who is believed to be his father. At around the age of 12, he was sent to Baltimore to work for Hugh Auld.
Following the death of Fredrick’s, slave owner, Captain Anthony, Douglass was sold to the ownership of Anthony’s son-in-law. Douglass was later hired out to a professional slave breaker, a man who would beat and mistreat slaves until they gave up and did whatever they were told. Weeks later, Douglass began to fight back, consequently the beatings stopped. He then became under the ownership of the Auld’s. The Auld’s took Douglass back home with them to Baltimore, where he began to work on the shipyards.

An education often opens new doors for people, but how does a lack of an education affect other people? What causes such a stark difference between people with knowledge and people no knowledge at all? In the Narrative of Frederick Douglass an American Slave we can see that Douglass is more intelligent than the other slaves on the plantation he is living on due to his hidden ability to read. With his level of education, he is able to see the brutal mistreatment of slaves and is unable to look at things the same way when he was an uneducated slave. The slaves on the plantation do not know how to read and therefore do not view being a slave the way Douglass views it.
As he recounts his pitiful existence under the watch of the formidable Mr. Covey, Frederick Douglass underscores how broken he is. Douglass aims to highlight the impact that Covey’s tyranny had on his hopeful spirit and inquiring mind. He accomplishes this by putting heavy emphasis on the ships in Chesapeake Bay and his perspective on these ships. After describing his life with Covey, Douglass breaks from his narrative style to direct an incensed monologue at the white-sailed ships in the bay.
