Especially having to watch her grow up and not be able to get the help she desperately needed but was unavailable because the family could not support her individual needs fully, the only person that could ease her pain was Henrietta which is illustrated by this quote, “…but she just stared back, unflinching, her eyes haunted with fear and sadness that only softened when Henrietta rocked her back and forth” (Skloot 44). We were economically disadvantaged because mother’s salary was not sufficient to cover the entirety of expenses, or provide for additional needs. Furthermore, we did not have financial support from my father, because my parents were divorced. Fortunately, I was able to receive loans and grants to pay for my tuition, because my mother could not afford to.

Douglass didn’t grow up in the best environment either, never fully knew who his dad was, getting separated from his mom – Harriet Bailey – being whipped and beaten, watching many other slaves die or get beaten, and that’s just the start.
