The Legislative branch is a bicameral National Congress that consists of the Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. The Federal Senate consists of 81 seats and three members that are each from the 26 states of Brazil, plus the federal district of Brasilia. The members from each state are directly elected in multi-seat constituencies by a simple majority vote. These people will serve 8 year terms with ⅓ and ⅔ of the membership elected alternately every 4 years. The last elections were held on October 5, 2014 for ⅓ of the senate. The next elections to be held will be on October 2018 for ⅔ of the senate. The Chamber of Deputies consists of 513 seats, these members are directly elected in multi-seat constituencies by proportional representation
