Do you know what an artist is? An artist is a person who practices any of the various creative arts; such as, a sculptor, novelist, poet, film-maker, architect, inventor, and painter. Well, there is one artist, his name is Leonardo daVinci; he was called the Renaissance Man. Leonardo daVinci was referred to as the Renaissance Man, because he was an architect, inventor, painter, and scholar of all things scientific. In the following paragraphs, you will read about how Leonardo became who he was, what important things he accomplished, and why what he did was important.

Leonardo was an intelligent artist. When Leonardo was 21 years old he drew the Baptism of Christ. This drawing was completed on August 5, 1473, and was made with pen and ink. Leonardo was constantly coming up with ideas for new transportation and machines. He invented a cannon that was easy and light to move on the battlefield. He told the Duke of Milan that his invention of the tank would be “good for breaking the ranks”. When Leonardo drew or painted, he made it look realistic by using perspective and proportion. Perspective is the art of drawing solid objects on a two-dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth and position in relation to each other when viewed from a particular point. Proportion is the realistic size of parts of a whole elements within an object. Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa between 1503-1506. This painting is famous all around the world and is a great example of him using perspective and proportion. In addition to the arts, da Vinci studied anatomy, botany, geology, zoology, hydraulics, aeronautics, physics, and architecture. Leonardo was raised by his father and step mother until the age of five. At five he was sent to his father’s estate in Vinci where he lived with his uncle and grandparents. Leonardo is considered the archetype Renaissance man, a man who excelled in intellect, art, and social skills. He was taught basic education, including reading, writing, and math. At 14, Vinci began a lengthy apprenticeship with Andrea Del Verrocchio in Florence.
Leonardo da Vinci was not only a painter but also an architect, and inventor. Due to this he was known as The Renaissance Man (Bio.com Staff). Leonardo’s paintings have had a lasting impact on the Renaissance era. His most known pieces of work are The Last Supper and Mona Lisa.
He made many achievements that had changed history. Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest masters to have ever lived in the renaissance. He had talented gifts that got improved by good education. Born April 15th, 1452, in Vinci, Italy. His “last name” Di Vinci means “from Vinci” in Italian. He was born from Messer Piero and Caterina(Last name not known), Leonardo was born illegitimately, which means his parents were not married. He lived his first five years of life in Anchiano with his mother, then moved to Vinci to live with his Uncle, Francesco. He never lived with his father, for his father was a noble(rich general) , and had a family of his own without Leonardo and his mother.
However, had Leonardo da Vinci not taken an interest in the human body and its functions, much of the progression of knowledge might have been delayed. One of the most famous anatomical drawings by da Vinci, the Vitruvian Man, is an incredibly accurate representation human muscles and flexibility. The reason this drawing and so many others were so hauntingly accurate, was because of the method in which da Vinci used to draw them. For example, in his cranium illustrations, “he first undertook a series of detailed studies of the human skull in 1489, borrowing from the architect's rigorous technique of representing three-dimensional forms in plan, section, elevation, and perspective view. (Bambach, 2002)”.
Leonardo da Vinci is the true Renaissance gentleman an artist and inventor. He was born in 1452 in Vinci Italy. Da Vinci was extremely well rounded talents such as a sculpture, architect, philosopher, engineer, and last but not least a scientist. His portrait the Mona Lisa is the best-known painting in the world, the identity of the woman behind that mysterious smile is still unknown. The Last Supper is another famed painting in the Catholic community, which portrays Jesus with his disciples.

What separates Leonardo Da Vinci from everyone else during the Renaissance is that he didn’t limit himself to just one field. He expanded his horizons so that he could experience and understand life to his greatest ability. He was not only an artist but also an inventor, an anatomist, a mathematician, an engineer, a musician, and a philosopher. These different fields that he explored helped him to strive in each individual field because he would apply that knowledge he would acquire from math and use it to create a beautiful piece of art that was mathematically pleasing to the eye.
