Once he figured out that the fair was right next to his building, he turns his place into a “hotel” for people from the fair to stay in. Holmes kills a lot of people during the time of the fair and eventually people start to find out. He eventually leaves Chicago and hides until he is arrested for one of the crimes he did in Philadelphia. A detective investigates Holmes past, and finds out about all the people he had killed. I think Erik Larson set out to show the powerful legacy of both men in the book, Burnham and Holmes.
On December 23, 1981, Thomas Sophonow, a Canadian man, was wrongfully accused of murder. 16 year old Barbara Stoppel was ruthlessly killed at the washroom of her workplace. Unfortunately, eyewitnesses mistakenly chose Mr. Sophonow as being the murderer. Eye witnesses stated that a man, whose appearance was very similar to that of Thomas Sophonow, locked the door and made his way to the back of the shop where he was presumed to have strangled Barbara Stoppel to death. Furthermore, while Thomas Sophonow was in custody, he showed an undercover officer a door locking technique.

The reason my husband asked me about it was, years later after I had begun to date and finally married, I saw a news story about two robbers arrested not far from where we live. The report mentioned it was two men, dressed in black, who had robbed a home and tried to kill one of the owners. The reporter said the third man, who had worn a skull mask over his face, had never been caught. I had started panicking at this, and eventually told my husband all about what had happened. He knew my brother had died, and that it had been during an attempted robbery, but not much else.

One could say that the most evident origin of grief in this chapter is fixed around the usage of alcohol. The first occurrence of death that is depicted is when, “My dad’s best friend, Eugene, was shot in the parking lot of a 7-eleven in Spokane.” “Way too drunk, Eugene was shot and killed by one of his good friends, Bobby who was too drunk to even
Alex King killed his father at the age of 13, he got only 7 years in prison. Once he was out, he got into a car accident and ran from authority going back into the system. This is just one incident, now moving onto Nathaniel Abraham, who killed a 17 year old when he was just 11 years old got only 10 years in a juvenile facility. Abraham was not tried as an adult, got out was charged with not only drug possession, but also charged for assaulting 2 guards facing more time in prison. Therefore, not trying juveniles as adults will or possibly can lead them to committing other minor or major crimes.
This makes them seem more like villains than heroes. One case of this is in the murder of Kelly Thomas, “a Californian schizophrenic man who police beat to death in 2011. The story goes that the owner of a club called the police because they were suspicious that someone was breaking into the vehicles. When they arrived, the police saw no evidence of this. They did spot Thomas and they tried to question and frisk him.
A whole year had gone by without Christine being home, and Jermaine was worried. On July 26, 2013, Jermaine filed a missing person report. It was quickly ignored and Jermaine just went back to work. He followed the day up at a night club, then went to the back alley to go back to his car, he then saw Trey carrying Christine's dead body into his white van, screaming "I told you I'd get you back you ____!" Weeks went by, then years, Jermaine then turns to the habit of drinking.

After Dahmer killed more and more men and consuming their bodies, Dahmer lived his average day live without anyone knowing his secret.
Ronnie Kray shot and murdered George Cornell, a partner of the Richardsons, pioneers of an opponent posse, at the Blind Beggar bar in Whitechapel on 9 March 1966. Ronnie was savoring another bar when he learned of Cornell 's area. He ran there with his sibling 's driver John Dickson and his partner Ian Barrie yet murdered Cornell alone. There are varying intentions offered for the homicide: Cornell 's position as a pioneer of a contradicting group; Cornell was debilitating the Krays; he had already offended Kray; Cornell was thought to have a section in the homicide of Ronnie 's previous partner, Richard Hart. Ronnie Kray was at that point experiencing neurotic schizophrenia at the season of the executing.
