President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery to have the Lewis and Clark expedition find a waterway that could connect the United States for transportation because he had aspirations to expand to the Pacific and Northwest making the expedition important to his agenda for the United States. (The Corp of Discovery, 2016). Another reason for the important expedition was to create a relationship with the American Indians, and the American fur trade, while learning the North American topography and geography of the land which was also important to the exploration (Corps of Discover, 2016). The heads of the group were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. When starting the expedition meriwether lewis bought many gifts for the indians such as beads, coats, fabrics, and hats that could hopefully help convince the indians to be relatively good friends with the explorers and our country. Not long after they were settled, the U.S. government declared that the land they settled was part of Indian Territory and not in the territory of Arkansas. The Lewis and Clark expedition was the first American exploration across the western part of the United States. They were known as the “Corps”. Their exploration find a practical route across the Western half of the continent. Lewis and Clark encountered many obstacles like the Rocky Mountains, but found the Pacific ocean and a way across the United States. By the courageous exploration of Lewis and Clark, their encounters with Native Americans, and the exchange of foods, animals, and knowledge shaped the United States as it is today.

During the entire journey, the expedition, which consisted of around four dozen men, traveled 8,000 miles in total, at a rate of 10 to 20 miles per day. Throughout the expedition, Lewis took detailed notes of the soil, climate, animals, plants, and native peoples, as he had been instructed by President Jefferson. In commitment to his orders, he discovered 178 plants and 122 animals as well. Another of the expedition's achievements, was the success of befriending the Native Americans. In fact, in one of their many interactions with the Native Americans, they met a young girl named Sacagawea and her husband Toussaint Charbonneau, who would later accompany them on the rest of their journey.

On the Lewis and Clark expedition, the two men had encountered Native American tribes. Nobody has been completely sure if they treated the Indians with respect. Lewis and Clark were known for an incredible journey that changed US history. The journey increased the size of the US dramatically. From May 14, 1804, to September 23, 1806, a dangerous but yet history changing exploration occurred. Through many dangerous situations and hardships, the expedition of Lewis and Clark turned out a success.

After Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory he commissioned the Corps of Discovery which was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.We were on a fact finding mission to find a Northwest Passage, become friends with the Native Americans and tell them that America now owns the land, and collect information about plants and animal. The trip began in May of 1804 from St. Louis traveling to the Pacific Ocean and in September of 1806 we returned to St. Louis.

The history of the Pacific Northwest is an intriguing time period for the United States and the expansion of the country. Many individual contributed to the growth and transformation of the region, however, several particular leaders created insurmountable adjustments to the region, that their names have gone done in history.

Jim Bridger was born in March 17,1804 in Richmond,Virginia, Lewis and Clark started their epic western expedition two months before Jim Bridger was born. Bridger headed west along with the routes that Lewis and Clark pioneered. Then twenty years past and Jim Bridger became one of the most important Mountain men of the 19th century. Overall Bridger became famous in history for being a memorable and brave mountain men.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the expedition to survey the land West of Mississippi, known as Louisiana Territory placed at the request of President Thomas Jefferson. Lewis and Clark and their expedition began their journey near St. Louis Missouri, in May 1804.
