On Li Yu’s Poetry: A Laureate Coming Alive Contemporary scholar Wang Guowei comments on Li Yu in his widely-known On Chinese Ci Poetry: “Men’s ken of Ci has broadened only since Last Ruler Li, their insight deepened, so that the songs of courtesans eventually became a part of scholar-officials’ literary life” (Wang). Furthermore, in Fu Tang Comments on Ci Poetry, poet Tanxian Qing from Qing dynasty also praises him, “The Ci poems of Last Ruler, highly estimable and wondrous, are sufficiently comparable to Li Po’s poetry” (Qing). Undeniably, during his 42 years of life, Li Yu has pushed the aesthetic value of Chinese Ci poems to an unprecedented level, his few remaining works having been recited for over a thousand years. In this essay, I shall discuss this poet in two separate sections: the influence of Li Yu’s experience on his poetry themes, as well as the categories of his poems and his specific writing techniques. There is an obvious internal conflict ongoing within the father’s thoughts; the father desperately wants to tell his son a story but cannot come up with one. The author highlights the altering views held by the father and the son through the use of shifting points of view and the intended structure. These two devices adeptly establish the poem’s profundity and intensity of emotions; moreover, it brings light to a common battle that evolving filial relations face against time; as innocence eventuates into maturity, parents inevitably feel helpless and nostalgic.

The poem “A Story” by Li-Young Lee depicts the complex relationship between a boy and his father when the boy asks his father for a story and he can’t come up with one. When you’re a parent your main focus is to make your child happy and to meet all the expectations your child meets. When you come to realize a certain expectation can’t satisfy the person you love your reaction should automatically be to question what would happen if you never end up satisfying them. When the father does this he realizes the outcome isn’t what he’d hope for. He then finally realizes that he still has time to meet that expectation and he isn’t being rushed.
Li-Young Lee’s poem “Eating Alone” expresses a son’s loneliness and love for his father that has passed away. He continuously connects the father to all that the speaker does whether it is lifeful or not. Lee does so in a way through imagery, tone, and irony. Li-Young Lee uses imagery in “Eating Alone” through life and death.
This poet used a Chinese sonnet style with Confucianist, Buddhist, and Daoist thoughts and mainly wrote about politics at that time. He entrenched his writings with emotions mainly heightened sorrow and misery, which was a reflection of what he was living through. Qin Shi Huang-di is often regarded as a great leader within history. However, he was also paranoid and got rid of anyone who disagreed with him, but without Qin, there might be no China. Furthermore, despite his mixed reputation today, he brought six warring kingdoms together to form the basis of a country that has lasted to this day, an impressive feat that was a huge turning point in Chinese history. Qin’s effect on China and by default, on the other countries of the world was enormous. In fact, his dynasty, the Qin dynasty, even gave China its name (“Shi Huangdi Becomes Emperor”).
The two important themes that I identified within this extract are beauty and love. Firstly, beauty is conveyed via descriptions of Ling’s wife. This is evident in the line “ une épouse et la prit très belle”. I think that the beauty of the wife mirrors the appreciation for aesthetics that is clearly evident in the text as if the wife herself, was as beautiful as one of Wang-Fô ‘s paintings. The latter theme is evident in the love for his wife as well.
