War is too destructive of a force for people or the societies of the world to handle. It makes people have to do things that would otherwise be considered inhuman, just so that they can survive. In the story “The Sniper,” a man is forced to kill an old woman because, she was telling his enemy where he was hiding. He had to murder his fellow countrymen because they had different beliefs than he did. They wanted to change their country so that it gave them more rights, so their country decided to settle these beliefs with war. Over the centuries many stories have been written revolving around this subject, one of the greater known artists of these stories is Liam O’ Flaherty. According to britannica.com, one of the leading figures …show more content…
Once the sniper arrived to another position for protection; he fished out his field dressing and ripped it open with his knife. He then dripped the fluid from an iodine bottle into the wound and placed cotton wadding over the wound. After tying a bandage over the wound he had to make a conscious effort to overcome the pain. The sniper needed to make an escape plan, so he sat in his location, nursing his wound and thinking. The sniper then came up with his escape plan, which was to make the enemy sniper think he was dead. He put his cap on the end of his rifle and placed it over the parapet on the roof. A bullet soon went through the cap and the sniper let his hand hang over the side, and he let the rifle fall to the street. He fell and brought his hand with him as he crawled away to get a good look at if the enemy thought he was dead or not. He saw silhouette of the enemy, so the sniper brought out his revolver and shot the enemy. The corpse of the man who the sniper had shot fell to the streets, and the sniper cursed himself and the war and threw his gun to the ground, which is when if fired and almost killed him. The sniper then left the roof to go report to his commander but got curious and went to see if he knew the man that he had shot. When he turned the body over he realized the man he shot was his brother. O’ Flaherty ended the story this way to help get the meaning of this story across to the audience more
This shows the sniper went through his brain and fast forwarded to the future to see what the outcome could have been and then made the choice. He could have been quick to fire, but he thought through it and of the consequences. Another example is “ the sniper lay still for a long time nursing his wounded arm and planning escape” ( Flaherty 5) So meaning he was smart enough to be multi-tasking. He was smart enough to have the resources and the experience to treat his wound.
A round had entered thru his left thigh and exited near his ass causing him to start losing a large amount of blood. The other soldier that had come unwounded in the advanced bandaged Patton’s wound up and wanted to try and get him back to safety but Patton refused. Patton made the soldier run back to the tank brigade and give the position of the German machine gun nest.
“Taking off his cap, he placed it over the muzzle of his rifle. Then he pushed the rifle slowly upward over the parapet, until the cap was visible from the opposite side of the street” (O’Flaherty 3). This just proves how the republican is trying to trick the other sniper across the wat. The sniper wants the other person to think that they had killed the sniper. That why when the other person thought that they had killed the sniper that is why the other person stood up and started walking off the roof.
This is just one of the many crazy events that took place in the autobiography American Sniper, written by the deadliest sniper in American History, Chris Kyle. Although Chris faced many problems in his
But the sniper is much different. He is very arrogant, as he is eating a sandwich and risks a smoke ‘because he can.’ Even after he is shot, he still retains a sense of arrogance and entitlement. Also, he risks crossing the street to see who the enemy sniper was that he killed, even though it is extremely dangerous. His arrogance is portrayed in the passage, “The revolver went off with a concussion, and the bullet whizzed past the sniper’s
Among the rooftops, a vigilant sniper awaits for his adversary to approach. But this ruthless soldier does not let anything or anyone hinder his sacred duty. In Liam O’Flaherty’s “The Sniper”, irony and conflict vividly illustrates the harsh realities of war through the eyes of the protagonist, a Republican sniper in the Irish Civil War. O’Flaherty provides suspenseful twists interpenetrating the story, showcasing his use of situational irony. Firstly, an old, delicate woman walks over to the enemy’s armored car and points out the sniper's location.
By the end the battle is over and it leaves and dread and regret in the sniper. Eventually after going through machine gun fire the sniper plays face-to-face with the man he shot and sees his brother. "The sniper turned over the dead body and sees his brothers face." This means that the sniper realizes what he had done and wishes he hadn't. This is an example that in the war people do things that they wish they had not.
This is of great significance to the main protagonist, known as the sniper, because his enemy can also be seen as a reflection of himself. This event causes him to feel remorse and regret about his actions. For example, Liam O’Flaherty writes “The sniper looked at his falling enemy falling and shuddered. The Lust of battle died in him. He became bitten by remorse.”
This would be so mortifying to experience. Not only did the sniper have to experience his brother's death, but he also has to deal with the fact that he was the one who killed him. The story “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, shows a huge part of history that explains how war veterans and anyone that has experienced war, could be suffering from the extreme trauma and pain that war can
In the poem, “War is Kind,” by Stephen Crane, war is satirized to convey social commentary. Throughout the poem, war is shown both to be happy and kind, and then the reality of it is shown, talking about how violent and gruesome it is. This is similar to the satire Candide, by Voltaire, as well as the short story “The War Prayer,” by Mark Twain. In Candide, the main character experiences many terrible things, one of which is war, and sees the horrible tragedies that no one mentions when talking about war. In “The War Prayer,” an old man gives his views on war and tells the sad reality of how war only hurts people.
The sniper tricks his enemy into believing he is dead and kills him. He then walks up to the dead sniper’s body and the republican sniper realizes that he has killed his own brother. The theme of this story is that war reduces human beings to mere objects. In the story “Cranes,” the main character is Songsam. There is a Civil
To begin with, in the story "The Sniper" the main character is the Republican Sniper. The conflict in the story was that there was a civil war taking place in Ireland and people were getting killed. The Republican Sniper 's motive was to kill the opponent and not die. Towards the end of the story, the character learns that he has killed his own brother
A machine gun tore up the ground around him with a hail of bullets, but he escaped. He threw himself face downward beside the corpse. The machine gun stopped. Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother 's face." (O 'Flaherty n.p.).
In the short story The Sniper by Liam O’Flaherty, a main theme is that war is cruel. This is supported by many details within the story. War makes people do things that they normally wouldn’t do, mostly because it is their duty to protect what they believe in or their country. For example, the
War is destruction at its finest. If a country wants to make peace then why would they kill thousands of the other country’s inhabitants for peace? That is the complete opposite of what peace means. Peace means freedom of disturbance, quiet and tranquility. It does not mean explosions, gunshots, and death everywhere.
