The Life of Louie Zamperini During the war against Japan, Louie Zamperini and his crew were shot down force to crash into the Pacific Ocean. As a kid Louie Zamperini was a rebellious child, he caused problems everywhere he went. The entire city of Torrance, California knew him, he was the talk of the town. His brother Pete found a skill Louie possessed and train Louie to use it. Louie Zamperini soon became a great olympic athlete to break a record of 56 seconds on the last lap of the 5,000 meter run. When Louie Zamperini was sent to a POW camp he was brutally beaten up,“Louie raised his eye to the corporal’s face. Again came the whirling arm, the blow to the skull,the stumbling legs.”(pg. 173). The corporal had beaten Louie like this many times in a row, every time this happened Louie got back up. Another example the shows Louie Zamperini being resilient is in the Olympics in Germany. Louie and many others went for the 5,000 meter run,“In the 5,000, well over 3 miles, a final lap in less than 70 seconds was astounding. Louie had run his last lap in 56 seconds.”(pg.36). Louie didn’t get first, second, or third but he didn’t give up he used all his energy to push himself to an astounding 56 seconds on the final lap. He was able to bounce for being really far at the end to getting 8th just missing 7th. At the POW camp we have punished for stealing and was punched, “For the first few punches, Louie stayed upright. But soon his legs wavered, and he collapsed. He pulled himself up, but fell again with the next punch, and the next.”(pg. 209).
