In the story Edward Scissorhands by Tim Burton, the author shows in the establishing shot a big dark mansion. In the story, Edward Scissorhands had been living up there until Peg finds Edward and brings him home for him to adapt to a new life. Burton uses lighting and mise en scene to wrap readers around the suspense and drama shown by burton throughout the movie. Tim Burton, in Edward Scissorhands, uses low-key lighting to show suspense and evil. For example, when Peg enters Edwards mansion the lighting is very dark, spooky, evil, and low key. Unlike the high key lighting Burton uses in the beginning of the movie when he shows the neighborhood, the low-key lighting used in this scene makes the mansion have a sense
In the movie Big Fish, low-key lighting was used in the scene where Edward sees the imaginary girl in the lake. The effect was used to create a feeling of suspense because the town of Specter was perfect, in fact so perfect it gave you an eerie feeling because you didn’t know what to expect out of it. Whereas in the movie Edward Scissorhands, Low-key lighting was used to enhance the creepiness in the scene where Peg meets Edward at the old mansion on the hill. This technique was used to to make the Audience see who Edward was and what a freak he was. Not all lighting in Burton’s films were all depressing, dark, and eerie.
The Different Ones Everyone is judged in today’s society and make the people who are different than everyone else stand out the most. These so called different people can choose to live a life of despair or grow out of their shell and be proud of who they are. Tim Burton is one of these people. Burton has taken what is different about him and turned it into a career which has made him one of those well-known directors in the movie community.
For example, when Peg goes to Edward's house for the first time, everything is dark. You can barely see Edward when he comes out from hiding, because of how dim the light was. In addition to music and lighting Tim Burton also uses camera angles to show how tiny Peg was compared to Edward’s huge mansion.
Secondly, Tim Burton uses costuming as a device in his films to portray his unique style. In his film Edward Scissorhands, his peculiar style is shown through the main character’s wardrobe. Edward, the main character, has uncontrollable, big black hair, and stitched leather clothes. In addition to his crazy black hair and distinct clothes, his hands are made up of many pairs and pieces of scissors, and he has a pale complexion that contains many scars. Burton’s style is shown in Edward because this character is dark, mysterious, and scary.

The film Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring makes use of low key and high key lighting. The low key lighting is seen when Gollum is first introduced in an ominous dark blue lighting that creates suspense and suggests an air of mystery. Further on the unnatural chiaroscuro is created when the Nazgul on his horse stands on a cliff with a lit up background surrounded by a dark forest. This makes the Nazgul seem more mysterious and threatening to the audience.

For instance, in the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, it is shown how dark and gloomy the town is while the factory is disconnected from society compared to when Charlie's grandfather was younger, working in an upbeat and colorful environment.
