Link Crew Reflection

I have come a long way in my high school experience. Learning who I am and how to make the best of my situation has brought me to where I am now. The classes I take, the teachers I have, the people I meet, and the organizations I join are some of the key components to my success in school, accomplishments in life outside academics, and the choice of paths I have set in front of me. An education degree is one of these paths I hope to embark down and a scholarship from Eastern could make all the difference in my college decision. As I mentioned, I have been involved in NHS and Link Crew these past two years. In Link Crew, I have experienced very exposed leadership situations including leading my own group of about eight freshmen through orientation with a partner. I learned a lot about what it takes to be a true leader, rather than part of a group of leaders following a leader. While Link Crew holds more of a focus on helping younger students at my high school, NHS has brought me far beyond that. I got to help in a third grade classroom twice a week for a few months last year, and it opened my eyes to the need for attention and love at that young age. I’ve also helped put on a Christmas party for a Detroit elementary school last winter, an extremely humbling experience. I also volunteer with the children in my church and have learned so much from the kids and the adults I work with. Last summer I had the amazing opportunity to volunteer as a staff member at the Bible camp I grew up going to. I was able to serve in the capacity that I was once served in. All of these opportunities have grown me as a person as I reach out to help others, especially children. Because I want to be a teacher, helping people is the main goal of my projected profession.
