In order to conduct the in depth college interview assignment, I decided to interview Lisbeth Luna, a 11th grade from Middle College High School at LaGuardia Community College
Lizbeth Luna was born on Ecuador, she came to the United States with both of her parents and her brother when she was around four years old. Lisbeth, definitely describes herself as a Latino/Hispanic student. Lisbeth is eligible for free lunch, she actually stated that she believes everyone or the majority of students at her school are eligible for free lunch. Even though Lisbeth describes her first language to be Spanish, she stated that the majority of the time she finds herself speaking English with her friends and brother, expect with her parents. She attempts to talk in Spanish with her parents, but the majority of times she is always speaking English. Lisbeth lives at home with her Father (Marcos), mother (Gardenia), and with her brother (Marcos, who is 21 years old). Lisbeth believes her GPA is around 3.2 or 3.4. The highest level of education both of her parents have is a High School diploma. Her father works in a construction company, while her mother works as a babysitter in the city. Octavia Butler demonstrates that being educated is very important for survival then food, shelter, and safety, because an education can give you all of those things. When Lauren had to leave her home she had to depend on herself to survive. She is armed with a lot of information. She knows her city like the back of her hand and most importantly, where water is, and what plants she can eat and not eat. She learned all of this information from reading books from her father’s library.
In the essay “Aria: A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood” (1981), Richard Rodriguez, an experienced writer, expressed that “…it is not possible to for a child – any child – ever to use his family’s language in school” and began expressing his past experiences with bilingualism (510). Rodriguez recollects his feelings toward the accents he has listened to throughout his childhood, his “disabling confusion” from gaining fluency in English and Spanish, and the intimacy passing between sounds and words (519). By implementing his personal experiences, he entices his reader into reading actively in order to express how confusing, yet beneficial bilingualism can be. Rodriguez’s audience is focused to those who can relate when using more than one language
That is why Filemon Lopez, who is part of the Benito Juarez Civic Association states that they are working hard to teach the Mixtecs their rights, about the importance of health, housing but overall of education. Even in the Madera school district, the importance of education is being advocated for, for teachers such as Carmen Hernandez states that it is important that both children like adults learn both Spanish and English, so that they can later be able to function in an English speaking society, but also so that they can keep their language and their pride in their background. Such as in the lecture about linguistic anthropology lecture that we went over in class, where it was explained that for the most part once English was learned that native languages were used less and less then forgotten, for only a subset of the population usually those who are older are the only ones who maintain the language going until they are gone. That is why Carmen emphasizes the importance of providing bilingual classes for Mixtec adults and children. Considering this, she doesn't have a strong foundation based on her future and dreams she would like to achieve. While in the other hand, for Victor and his family their migration journeys being in Quincy, Florida there where they are picking tomatoes. For Victor his family is the inspiration and they will always be his inspiration because he does not want to see them suffer. He knows what they have been through and is ready to change not just his life, but theirs as well. Victor is his little sisters’ role model and the one held responsible since his other sisters are still back in Mexico.
LaRosa did was to build a trusting rapport with Almeada, taking time to learn about her culture and environment making her feel like her life mattered. Almeada moved to a new neighborhood after baby Anne was born, started working long hours to support her and baby Anne but struggled with no social or human services support and is depressed and feels hopeless about her current situation, having to leave baby Anne with a 10-year-old 6 day a week, she knows this is not acceptable. She reaches out to Ms. LaRosa, Ms. LaRosa knows social care, social control and rehabilitative services are needed, since Almeada is only 17, and has no family support, she needs help with child care, parenting skills, along with being able to work on her vocational skills. Using her networking and teaming skills she finds Almeada and baby Anne a case manager in her new neighborhood, she found Hernando Alvarez, a case manager in the child services division of the state department of human service, Almeada would now have the support team she need to help her, and baby
Sophie and Martine both speak Creole and English. This was how Martine made sure Sophie never forgot her native language and how she was able to communicate so well with her aunt and grandma during her visit to Haiti. Bong was also able to enjoy his trip to Korea because he was able to speak the language. My mother was really proud of me when I finally graduated ESOL. However, even after I graduated my mother never stopped talking to me in Spanish.
However, in order for one to truly understand the arguments made by the authors they must also understand the context behind these arguments; therefore, knowing how the individual authors’ definition of bilingualism lets the reader truly absorb what points they’re trying to make and why. In Espada’s essay, he defines bilingualism as a way for a person to remain in contact with their different cultural identities. There are many areas in the essay where the reader could interpret this definition from. However, the most significant piece of evidence appears at the beginning of the essay where Espada mentions his friend Jack Agueros’ analogy to describe his bilingualism “English and Spanish are like two dogs I love. English is an obedient dog.
Selena Quintanilla’s father once said, “We have to be more Mexican than the Mexicans and more American than the Americans.” In today’s society, many have encountered the challenge of not being able to be who they really are because they fear not being accepted by others, more specifically their culture. But, what happens when an individual is part of two worlds that have just as many rules? Gloria E. Anzaldúa was a Mexican-American writer and poet who made a major contribution to the fields of cultural, feminist, and queer theory. Anzaldúa identifies as a Chicana and speaks different variations of Spanish, some of which she exhibits in her works.
He later found the different between the two languages. For example, classroom language is the same as public language while home language is the same as private language. Rodriguez felt more comfortable in speaking Spanish, his private language, than English. Therefore causing him to not really participate or speak in class. I chose questions that would be easy for her to answer and questions that could be incorporated into my essay. I also asked questions that would be fun for her to answer and that could help influence my decision on the career. I used the answers to the questions to introduce the career.
Given that first issue starts out at home with language barriers when parents are not able to assist their child with the problems they may need help with. But, may continue when certain high schools are only interested with their top 10 graduates or in other words the students with the highest honors, or are just wanting you to get your degree and get out of there depending on the school and the area that it is in. A study done by the University of Georgia did an analysis on Hispanic high school seniors on track to graduate who were all invited to participate in a program to transition them from high school to college. The entire goal of this program was to increase the number of students who applied to college. Luckily this programmed increased
Richard Rodriguez and Gloria Anzaldúa are two authors who both immigrated to America in the 1950s and received first hand experience of the assimilation process into American society. During this time, Rodriguez and Anzaldúa had struggled adjusting to the school system. Since understanding English was difficult, it made adjusting to the American school system increasingly difficult for Rodriguez. Whereas Anzaldúa, on the other hand, had trouble adjusting to America’s school system due to the fact that she didn’t wish to stop speaking Spanish even though she could speak English. Both Rodriguez and Anzaldúa had points in their growing educational lives where they had to remain silent since the people around them weren’t interested in hearing them speaking any other language than English.

A tongue is one of the most important body parts, if that’s what we shall call it, that a human being has. If it was not for the tongue, it would be a very quiet world. Gloria Anzaldúa, born in 1942, near the large Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, was bound to make a difference in lives before she ever knew it. When Gloria turned eleven she started to work in the fields as a migrant worker and then started on her family’s land after the passing of her father. In Gloria Anzaldúa’s the short story, How to Tame a Wild Tongue, she describes her upbringing and growing up in a dual culture society split in two.
Samuel Huntington’s article The Hispanic Challenge argues that Hispanics, specifically Mexicans, are not true American citizens. According to Huntington, Americans are people who believe in the American creed. However, he believes this creed is being threatened. For some time now, large influxes of Hispanic immigrants have been coming to the US and have brought their own culture with them. The writer of Speaking in Tongues, Gloria Anzaldua, believes that Hispanics have the right to hold onto their culture in America.
