After graduating, the industry that catches my eye the most is the medical industry. When thinking of the medical industry, what first comes to mind is team work. Team work in the medical industry is huge. Without team work, the medical field would face a lot of problems. I think a major listening skill for this industry is to be able to stop talking and listen to what the patient or whoever has to say. Being able to do so will help you know what the problems there are and what needs to be done to fix the issue. Another big effective listening skill is physical barriers. In this industry, workers cannot get distracted from your surroundings. You must be able to focus on what is being said and not be distracted from others. “You cannot listen if you cannot hear what is being said” (Guffey,10). Some skills that are essential to have well talking or the phone is a great voice command. Well on the phone, you do not want to have a very soft-spoken voice were your customer has a hard time hearing you. Also, when speaking on the phone you want to have common curtesy, such as using “Ma’am, Sir, Mr., Misses, or Mrs.” The worker on the phone must be present and focused into what the customer is saying, making sure you are giving them your full attention. Let the person on the other phone know that you are there to help and will do the best you possibly can to make sure everything is well taken care
I am writing to you in support of Toye Adefioye. Toye Adefioye shadowed me at Daughters of Miriam, a skilled nursing facility in Clifton, New Jersey, from 08/2013 to 06/2014 for over 1500 hours. Toye observed me while I provide therapy to patients of various diagnoses; diagnoses such as general orthopedic, neurological, cardiovascular, wound management, geriatrics, and so on. While understanding communication between nurses is important, similarly, communication is also important to the nurse and other disciplines. I was able to witness effective communication between disciplines that focused on the patients’ health. One example of this was pertaining to a patient in the ICU room. The respiratory therapist discussed the patient’s current situation with the hospitalist. The nurse I was shadowing used successful communication with the CNA on duty to help assist with the patient’s current needs at that particular time.

Reflection on the 5-Days Journey to Become a Better Listener Throughout the 5-days practice of active listening and basic attending skills in daily conversations, it was easiest for me to practice empathy. I found it easy to perceive the situation through others’ eyes and perspectives in order to capture the accurate meaning when I was nonjudgemental and listened attentively to others. As a result, I was able to develop empathic rapport in which I accurately sensed and understood others’ concerns as well as feelings as compared to when I conversed without empathy, allowing my presumptions to affect my interpretation of others’ meaning due to the need for others to agree with my worldview.
