Literacy Narrative Literacy And Identity

The book Choice Words by Peter H Johnson challenges teachers to think about the words that they say because teachers have such a powerful influence on how children see themselves. Teachers undoubtedly are a very influential part of child’s life. The words that teachers say (and don’t say) influence a child way beyond the time that he or she is in their classroom. For example, my daughter is in the second grade; she has vivid memories of all of her teachers. She remembers their character and how they made her feel. She has a positive attitude about school and loves to learn. As a mother, I am thankful for the teachers that have poured into her life. In the same way, I want to be a positive influence to my students.

I didn't read a book alone, but I read with my classmate and teacher in the classroom. I started reading more when I was in high school. Every day during after school, I always bought a book to Mrs.Hills (He is the computer minister, which I had a my 9th math in his class) and we are read together. The books that I read in the high school are Fence, Dark Water, Under the Never Sky, the Lord of the Flies, and the Rising Sun. My favorite book is Under the Never Sky.

From a very young age, about 5, I remember reading being the easiest thing I knew how to do. Most kids in my school hated it, but I had a passion for reading. The liberating feeling, and sensation of being able to do something on my own, encouraged me to read even more. Two people

All my life, I was always told that I was so smart and advanced for my age. Everything came easy to me: math, writing, reading, sports, and even playing many instruments. All this came with little work. So I seldom ever had to study or practice for anything. This occurred all throughout elementary and middle school. I was even placed in honor classes, yet those classes still turned out to be quite easy for me. I had nothing less than an A, but that was all about to change once I got to high school.

We were asked to write a literacy narrative in English class and at that moment I was tracing through my memories where language or listening had any influence on me. I was stuck. I have a few instances where I could see how language at a specific moment in life influenced me, but I just could not decide what to write about. Then it hit me, it was like a bulb lit up. The most influential event that involved some aspect of literacy, was when I attended the McHenry College fair. There are many events that led to this day and I could not imagine how my life would have turned out.

I was never truly an avid reader when I was younger. I was the oldest of five siblings and left in charge of taking care of my younger brothers and sister. I was more prone to spending time outside than reading a book. Of course, I did find myself enjoying a good mystery novel, but playing ball would always trump even a good book. All through school, I would find myself actively participating in one sport to another. I loved being active and thinking only of what I wanted to do. Life has a way of becoming a reality. The choices I made during my younger years have followed me to my current years. The busyness of work, family, and children have restricted my own freedom of time. Reading has become my favorite way of personal freedom without having to leave home. My favorite author at this present time is Beth Moore. She meticulously portrays God’s word and opened my eyes to the strength and power of God’s word for me today. God created me and has a specific purpose for me to fulfill. Children covered in glitter and glue is a sight to witness. Scattered around the room are broken crayons, uncapped markers, and torn paper scraps. This image at the end of the day at a preschool means that it has been a good day. When the day had just begun the sound of feet pattering and bouncing down the hallway was perceptible. The teachers knew that when all the children entered the room and saw the table aligned with crafts every student’s eyes would light up with excitement.

The history of my literacy has been a long road of a frustration and learned lessons. As a child, I was a bit of a loner so reading and writing were the closest thing to a social life for me. The things that I bottled up inside came out through my writing and it became somewhat of a pass time for me. As long I could remember literacy as has been an important value for me in my life because from very young age I got express my true self without being judged by the outside. Even though in my later years I would deal with some heartaches and set back that lead me to give up on my love for reading. I would always come back to my real first love.

This assignment was one of the hardest paper we had to do in our quarter because, we had complete freedom on how we wanted to develop our topic. During the peer review I found out that I had done the assignment wrong and didn 't have a clear idea of what I wanted to project in my paper. I took a moment to decide what I wanted to say and started to change and remove sentences that weren 't necessary. On my first draft of my Literacy Narrative I made negative statements about my writing, which wasn 't the purpose of the assignment. After some time, I finally decided to write about my growth in writing and how I found another outlet for my creativity and where I consider myself to be good at. Well, there are many things that made me the reader and writer I am, only a few important events had huge impacts on me. Events such as; teachers constantly correcting my grammar, not being able to pronounce certain words, and a soccer injury that made me a pick up a book. These things helped me become the reader and writer I am. It gave me motivation, strength , and courage.

Beside all those school books I now read, I use to read books about life, and history I also lloved mystery books the ones that make one wonder and keep you guessing till the end. Of course every girl has to have at least one romantic book they fell in love with, but not me I have many.

I 've learned that reading and writing can take me any where I want it to go. I can explore my mind to go anywhere by imagination, by reading and writing.However,My reading and writing experience since I was a kid until now I still having a difficulty.

During my elementary years, I don’t recall being interested in reading, but I do remember the first time I fell in love with it. I was in my 7th-grade reading class. I just completed a quiz when my teacher realized that I had nothing to do after. She offered me a book that I will remember for the rest of my life because it is the book that basically started my reading journey. It was called Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper, I loved the book so much that I read the whole entire series. When I first met someone who didn’t like the book I was beyond shocked. Right at that moment, I realized that reading has its own effects on me. Reading has changed my writing skills, it has improved my knowledge and lastly, it has helped me manage my stress while going through hard times. Without reading I wouldn’t be the person that I am today.

My literacy started when I was about 3 years old, and my mom enrolled me into preschool. My preschool was in this big white stone building that was connected to a church. My mom would check me in about seven in the morning and pick me up about three in the afternoon. I would spend a full school day there. In this building, I was first taught to read and write. The building was two stories, and the classrooms were upstairs. The tables and chairs were the perfect height for a toddler. For four years, I made crafts, practiced my alphabet, played, and was taught how to read in that classroom. If I wasn’t at preschool, my mom would make it a habit for me to read to her in the car. One of my favorite memories growing up is how much time I spent reading. Whenever I got a new book I couldn 't put it down. I remember that I would always read on the bus ride home. Reading was something that I liked to do. As I’ve gotten older my choice of books has changed alot, a different genre for each of my phases. Today the books that always manage to get my attention are usually the books based on true events.
