Down To Earth “He was a poor man, the husband of a sickly woman, whom his desertion would leave alone and destitute; and even if he had had the heart to desert her he could have done so only by deceiving two kindly people who had pitied him” (Wharton 8). Ethan Frome, a conflicted man trapped in a loveless marriage to his sickly wife weighs the possibility of fleeing with his lover. American author Edith Wharton adopted the ideas of Naturalistic and Realistic writing. She focused on the internal relationships of her characters. In contrast, Realism embodies the literary technique to describe story elements such as setting and characters, without using elaborate imagery or figurative

The environment in literature mainly pertains to the “social and cultural conditions that influence the life of an individual or community” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Authors try and illustrate how one tiny detail in nature can drastically affect the life of a person. In the poem “Luke Havergal,” there is a voice in his head urging him towards death, towards relief and peace from his unimaginable grief. The voice pleads” Yes, there is yet one way to where she is, Bitter, but one that faith may never miss” (Robinson 21-22). Every every waking minute is haunted by death, which keeps reminding him that better things are waiting for him beyond those gates. To enhance the theme of Discontentment, Edwin Robinson used nostalgia to contribute to the philosophy of naturalism. As he sighed, “Miniver scorned the gold he sought, but sore annoyed was he without it; Miniver thought, and thought, and thought, and thought about it” (Robinson 25-28). All Miniver dreams about is becoming rich and living this lavish lifestyle but he expects it to be handed to him with no work put forward. Robinson wrote against these common social norms to illustrate the unhealthy mindset people obtain. Frequently, authors create naturalistic conflicts to reveal why their characters react in a specific way. It started “when the loading finally began, a sleety rain …show more content…
Heredity, “the process by which characteristics are given from a parent to their child” (Cambridge Dictionary), influenced much of naturalistic writers' stories. Studying the behaviors of heredity proved successful for writers because it gave readers insight to see relationships differently. For example, naturalistic writers wanted to illustrate how our physical environment contributed to the internal struggles their characters experienced. “I regret to say that some of these were ladies. It is but due to the sex, however, to state that their impropriety was professional” ( Harte 452). Since women in Poker Flats did not earn as much money as men did, they turned to prostitution as a means of subsistence, demonstrating the prevalence of heredity. Not adhering to societal norms led to getting ousted from the community shortly after. Following the philosophy of heredity, Miniver Cheevy was born into a life that he did not want; and spent it wasting away. Said that ” Miniver loved the Medici, Albeit he had never seen one; He would have sinned incessantly could he have been one” (Robinson 17-20). He would have done anything to become wealthy except put in the work to do so. The passing of Richard Cory, however, turned out to be one of possibly the biggest tales. And ” So on we worked, and waited for the light, and went without themeat, and cursed the bread; And Richard Cory, one calm summer
Robin Benway's novel Far From the Tree demonstrates that genetics are not the only factor in determining the characteristics of a person but a person's parents and life events shape them dramatically as well. Starting off, a main character named Grace has gone through a teenage pregnancy. This hardship has made their family enter therapy; “‘I don't even recognize who I am anymore! You act like I’m just going back to high school and go to dances and prom and everything, but none of that has happened. I can’t even go to the mall without people whispering about me, calling me a slut!
Ethan Frome and “The Yellow Wallpaper both have women as their main characters in the stories. In Ethan Frome the women’s names are Zeena Frome and Mattie Silver. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the women’s names are Jennie, Mary, and the anonymous narrator. Each of the characters have their own unique traits and different personalities, but they also have many similarities. Each of the women play very big roles in their stories, and they are portrayed in different ways.
The problems that both Ethan Frome and Mrs. Pontellier faced in Ethan Frome and The Awakening, respectively, were due in part to personal problems facing them. Ethan Frome was starstruck by Mattie, the cousin of his wife, Zenobia. Years of dissatisfaction and an ever-growing rift in their relationship opened the door for Ethan to finally find happiness with Mattie, but this new happiness was coupled with unhappiness and drama from Zenobia. Edna Pontellier also suffered the same problem that Ethan underwent. Mrs. Pontellier, confused about her current relationship with Mr. Pontellier and how he was gone all the time, decided to find pleasure in other men, notably Robert and Alcee Arobin.
Altruism is always an admirable trait, but as with any other trait, if altruism is taken to an extreme, it can result in consequences such as giving away so many resources that one would be unable to provide for himself and being unwilling to risk harming others. This theme is portrayed in the short novel Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton, by means of the main protagonist and tragic hero, Ethan Frome. Due to his tragic flaw of selflessness, Ethan fails to muster up the courage to stand up for himself, which dooms him into the final demise, in which he and Mattie Silver cripple themselves in a sledding crash. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, Ethan possesses the tragic flaw of excessive selflessness.
Suicide is a growing issue in the United States and around the world. Utah has the fouth highest suicide rate in the United States with 21 suicides per 1,000. The novel Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton outlines the steps taken by Ethan and Mattie that lead to their attempted suicide: First, there was the influence from the people in Ethan’s life and how they can invoke misery, second a sense of hopelessness and how it is displayed through nature, and third the decision to utimately end their lives after recognizing their unique (or so it seems) unhappiness. These steps successfully mimick those faced by real world people who stuggle with depression thoughts of suicide.
Economic struggles appear in another story called “Outcasts of Poker Flats” by Bret Harte. In the story, society exiles a group of individuals for various crimes. There are women among the outcasts “due to [their] sex, however, to state that their impropriety was professional, and it was only in such easily established standards of evil that Poker Flat ventured to” (Harte 452). These women resorted to prostitution due to a conflict with economics. They couldn’t make enough money without having to resort to
A good example of this is theater. Characters have to outwardly express how they feel through things such as verbalized monologues and asides, or dramatic gestures and facial expressions. However in books, you can get a unique insight into the characters mind and how they not only interact with their own thoughts but also how they end up outwardly expressing them. An example of this in Bless Me Ultima is Antonio’s dreams. Rudolfo Anya utilizes dreamscapes and dream sequences as a method of pushing the narrative and Antonio’s development forward.
In this case, the environment refers to the world around us as well as the weather that fights and triumphs against us. The world around us has always created challenges for humanity, regardless of the time period. Jenifer Betts, from “yourdictionary.com”, claims that “This extreme form of Realism uses scientific objectivism, survival of the fittest, and the environment to mold and shape the characters. Therefore, in naturalism work, the characters might be controlled by their environment or fight for their survival” (Betts Paragraph 3). The environment remains unpredictable, presenting challenges when trying to plan for the weather it brings.
Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton tells the tale of a man named Ethan Frome, his wife, Zeena Frome, and his secret lover, Mattie Silver. Ethan finds himself conflicted over his new-found infatuation with Mattie. The story proceeds on with the struggle between Ethan, Mattie, and Zeena. The introduction of Wharton’s New England by Barbara White discusses how the wintery setting of New England makes the setting more isolated and adds despair. The excerpt also gives insight into how the wintery setting helped to form the story of the book.
The tragic novella of Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton focuses on adultery in rural New England. Stressing the importance of relationships, the narrator tells the story of Ethan Frome, a man searching for love. Despite being married to his cousin Zeena, he only views this civil union as a moral obligation. Then, he ventures into an adulterous relationship with Mattie Silver, and begins to understand what love is really about. The author often focuses on a red pickle dish, a treasured wedding gift, which unexpectedly shatters.
Ethan Frome and “Fatal Coasting Accident” Comparison Ethan Frome is a classic novel, written in 1911 by author Edith Wharton. She based the accident that occurred in her novel on the historical “Fatal Coasting Accident.” In Ethan Frome, the simplicity of the accident is similar to that of the “Fatal Coasting Accident”, but the details overall are very different. Edith knew one of the victims personally, which made her change some aspects out of respect, but she also changed them to make the story her own.
Presley Gregory Thom Williams Honors English 2 2 March 2023 The Blunt Truth Woven Into Literature The late 1800’s was a contrasting period of both tragedy and innovation, ranging from the Civil War, former President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, and the Great Chicago Fire all the way to women’s rights movements, the passing of the 15th Amendment of the Constitution, and the invention of the telephone (The People’s History). Some of the most significant events in history took place in the late 1800’s, which, inturn, caused a spark in realist literature.
Edith Newbold Jones-Wharton, author of Ethan Frome, was born into a wealthy New York family. She grew up in the world of high society, but her true interests were not in wealth, but rather the beauty of language. She consistently read and wrote numerous pieces from a young age. She later ended up marrying Teddy Wharton, a mentally challenged man. Ethan Frome, spurs from her own personal experiences with her husband.
The nature vs. nurture debate centers on whether human behaviour and personality are inherited (nature) or acquired (nurture); in other words, whether a person’s environment or a person’s genetic inheritance determines their behaviour and personality. Goldsmith and Harman (1994) adopt a neutral position, in which both nature and nurture influence people, stating that they “believe that the fundamental issue concerns the interplay between characteristics of the individual and of the relationship” (54). Goldsmith and Harman discuss temperament and attachment for infant, with temperament being linked to the nature side of the debate and attachment being linked with the nurture side; as a result, the infant’s temperament influences the attachment bond between the infant and the mother, but the attachment bond influences the temperament of the child as well. Therefore, both nature and nurture interact with each other to produce people’s behaviour (Harman et al. 54). Andersen and Berk (1998) take on the nurture perspective, while Leary (1999) claims that nature is the determining factor of a person’s personality.
Nature and Nurture Influences on Child Development Karla White ECE 205: Introduction to Child Development Instructor: Alesia Lane October 2, 2017 Nature and Nurture Influences on Child Development Describe the relationship between nature versus nurture. The nature vs. nature debate is the scientific, cultural, and philosophical debate about whether human culture, behavior, and personality are caused primarily by nature or nurture. Nature is often defined in this debate as genetic or hormone-based behaviors. Our genes determine the different traits that we have, such as eye color, hair, ear size, height and other traits.
