Xenophobia is the fear of foreigners or strangers. Xenophobia affects the relations and perceptions of an ingroup towards an outgroup, In South Africa xenophobia is a constant struggle and incidents have started to flare up recently. This essay will discuss the view point of three different newspapers towards xenophobia, the three newspapers are, the Herald, Mail & Guardian and Sunday Times.
A description of xenophobia in South Africa is clearly presented by Democratic Alliance (DA) parliamentary leader, Mmusi Maimane who gave a speech about recent xenophobic attacks. The mayor spoke about how administration will do everything in its power to prevent outbursts of xenophobic violence in the city of Johannesburg as there is no place for xenophobia in the city (Sunday Times, Times live, 2017).
The Sunday Times posted an article about xenophobic violence in South Africa where five people were left dead. Hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes amid unrest that has killed two foreigners and three South Africans, including a 14 year old boy. Despite the increased police presence, authorities are hard-pressed to stop unrest that recalls similar violence in South Africa in 2008 in which about 60 people died. The Herald said that, foreigners come from across the continent to work and that they have great potential to contribute to the South African economy. Local businesses fear that xenophobic violence will have a negative impact on South African business companies in Africa. This article firmly states that immigrants are good for a country. (Herald Live, 2015). African immigrants in South Africa are enhancing the economy of this country and should be respected, they should be no killing or have their properties burgled. Foreigners play a big role in enhancing the economy of South Africa, they create many work opportunities for unskilled local people and also invest in the country.
