Based on research, we can prove that reductions in poverty do not reliably reduce racial inequality, nor do they inevitably reach low income people of color. The poverty rate among American India and Latinos taken together was still 2.6 times greater than that for white Americans. This disparity was stunning, yet it was the smallest difference in poverty rates between whites and others in more than three decade. And from 2001 to 2003, as the economy slowed, poverty rates for most communities of color increased more dramatically than they did for white, widening the racial poverty gap. According to Stephanie Hogenson, the research and policy director at the Children’s Defense Fund in Minnesota shows that the programs that provide publicly subsidized health care to low-income individuals in the state tend to mostly benefit white children. Modern and historical forces combine to keep many communities of color disconnected from networks of economic opportunity and upward mobility. Therefore, poor people of color are also increasingly more likely than whites to find themselves living in high poverty neighborhoods with limited resources and limited options. This article of research suggest that many of the factor that cause poverty but research also realized that they just focus on what best for children but doesn’t ensure that those programs are accessible and easily utilized by children of color and their family. ‘Doing the things right’ just can give the what the best to children but the most effectiveness way to eliminate the poverty is ‘doing the things right’ that is ensure that the entire program are accessible by their family. Therefore, the family can give the good quality of life to their children. This section contains an evaluation of article. The percentage of children live in poverty higher and higher and the rate of poverty cannot reduce because of several factors. If did not solve problem that bring about poverty properly, then the rate of children living in poverty also will become higher because this will extent to next generation and they did not realized that they need to change the
Richard Proudfit started to feed my Starving Children and by using volunteers they pack food for those in need. His creation of feed my Starving Children has made the world better. In Kozol’s “Poverty’s Children,” he talks about one of the poorest communities in America, Mott Haven which is located in the South Bronx. Throughout his article, he brings up issues that the community has to face. The issues range from homelessness, disease, drugs, and gang related violence, and environmental issues. Each political philosophy that I learned about will view these problems in different ways. Six philosophies that I will use to explain the situation will be utilitarianism, libertarianism, liberal contractarianism, communitarianism, moral conservatism, and deliberative democracy.
As well as a similar topic of poverty in America, all texts have a comparable point of view. Jeannette Walls, the author of The Glass Castle, is a writer and journalist. During her childhood, Jeannette Walls lives in New York and moves many times with her nomadic family. Today, she is living happily in rural Virginia with her husband, John Taylor. Jeannette Walls views poverty as an obstacle that can make surviving problematic and a life ruthless.
Introduction Disparities in social welfare has long been an issue affecting minority and structurally disadvantaged groups in America. These populations can be described as socially and economically lagging behind the majority of their other social counterparts. This state often further restricts their opportunities for advancement. Although accomplishments in increasing the economic capabilities of minority groups have led to significant progress in the social and economic welfare for disadvantaged populations, crucial issues are still not adequately addressed and the progress made is far from the goals of many social welfare organizations seeking to uplift disadvantaged populations to acquire sustainable and prosperous living. The most memorable thing about a hospital is the smell. The sterile scent of rubber gloves and antibacterial cleaner was an all too familiar part of my childhood as I spent years swinging my feet nervously in waiting room chairs, waiting to be admitted into Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta time and time again. As my life became a series of being poked and prodded with needles for blood tests and IVs, having lead bibs placed on my chest for X-rays, and hearing the dreaded “How are you feeling today?”, the familiar aroma became a stench. Spending days in a hospital bed instead of in the classroom with my friends at school became taxing on my body and mind, and watching the toll it took on my mother who sat in the chair beside me was even more
According to Hodgkinson et al, there are “disparities in poverty rates depending on age, race or ethnicity, family structure, and geographic location. Although the largest number of poor and low income children are white, minority children are disproportionately affected, particularly African American, American Indian, and Hispanic children. In 2013, Hispanic and African American children were ~3 times more likely than white and Asian children to be poor. Children raised by single parents and children raised in the South or West are also more likely to be poor or low income than children residing in the Northeast” (Hodgkinson et al, 2016). Children and youth are a vulnerable population because they have no control over their situation or environment;
The article is not current but, it can be used as a comparison between poverty studies of today to that of five years prior. VI. It expands on the blame the poor and the blame society view in the book. The Article does the by bringing up the preconceived notions that most individuals would have about poverty, then shows research material with statistics to show evidence of his claim. a. I learned that the only way true way actually stop poverty is for individuals to start making an active role in its prevention and not just pushing the blame to someone else.
The article informs that in 1953 the federal government reported an official poverty rate, this was the first time this was done. Gallaway’s article essentially describes the war on poverty. Gallaway argues that the war on poverty, unintentionally, creates slow economic growth, greater income inequality, and high poverty rates. The author broadly examines poverty and economic growth and as a result, it is concluded that those who are below the poverty line are no longer impacted by any economic growth. In 2010, 15.75 million of America’s 70 million children were classified as living in poverty.

A major issue in America today is poverty. However not much is being done to help those in need. Many who struggle in poverty are those who struggle getting the basic necessities we need in the everyday life such as food, clothes, water, and shelter. Different factors that can contribute to poverty are lack of education, unemployment, poor economy, race/origin, non-effective policies, and illness/disease; therefore more help should be made towards helping those in need. One of the factors that contributes to poverty is lack of education.
According to the PBS Frontline video “Poor Kids” 2012, more than 46 million Americans are living beneath the poverty line. The United States alone has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the industrialized world. It is stated that 1 out of 5 children are living in poverty. The video documented the lives of three families who are faced with extreme hardships and are battling to survive a life of being poor. All three families have more than one child and could barely afford to pay their bills and purchase food for their household.
We now know that there are long-term effects on children whose families face economic depression. If the know this information and study these effects we can help combat the effects of poverty on children. Whether that be in a school or church setting there are things that adults can do to help fight the effects. The book Children of the Great Depression: Social Change in Life Experience was found through the article used it the Rhetorical Analysis paper which was a review of the book.
The cycle of poverty is something discussed in political, medical, education and social circles. The children that are stuck in the cycle often becomes adults that remain in the living conditions and lifestyle of poverty. A few ways that they become trapped is through their poor health and educational opportunities. My thesis statement is, The cycle of poverty continues to plague American children and families, but with some changes focused on health care and education they may be able to escape from the cycle.
These statistics are overwhelming due to the fact that child poverty affects all areas of their lives. Children exposed to poverty at such a young age are at a disadvantage in several areas; these children are at risk of low academic achievement, resulting in lasting negative effects. Our economy is not able to thrive if child poverty continues. Children living in poverty are also at risk of dropping out of school, being unemployed, and entering the juvenile justice system. Our government is responsible for ensuring that child poverty ceases to be an issue in the United States.
