According to Wikipedia, “Waste Management is the generation, prevention, characterization, monitoring, treatment, handling, reuse and residual disposition of solid wastes.”[13] Sustainable Development is defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs (as defined by the United Nations). It includes the participation of many sections of the society and the government. Hence, the list of Stakeholders in this activity is very long, and hence, the following list is by no means exhaustive:  Governmental Agencies: Governmental agencies like Municipal Corporations are largely responsible for the handling and collection and treatment of solid waste. The rules and guidelines for waste management are also made by the government itself. Thus, the government along with its various agencies hold a large stake in the process of waste management.  Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs): NGOs working towards collecting and recycling waste play a huge role towards Sustainable Waste Management. NGOs working for the better work conditions of Waste Pickers also contribute largely.  Community: The community plays a large role in solid waste management. Practices like Source segregation of solid waste largely affect what is dumped in the landfills finally. The society also decides what waste is and what is not. Reduction of waste is the most direct step towards solid waste management.  Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan was started by the Prime Minister as a cleanliness initiative. This is a great step towards spreading awareness about sustainable waste management by roping in various popular media personalities.  PepsiCo India Sustainable Waste Management Programme is a brilliant step in this direction. It is run in partnership with a leading environmental NGO, Exnora. This programme not only creates awareness among the community regarding sustainable waste management but also creates employment opportunities for women in the waste collection process.  Recently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in collaboration with BARC has set up a biomethanation plant which produces bio-gas from landfill dump.  BMC also has laid out a plan to make all civic bodies garbage free by setting up small-capacity biomethanation
