Title: An investigation into the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of female third level students towards the use of artificial sweeteners.
Abstract:
Artificial sweeteners have gained popularity in recent years with the population becoming more health conscious. The controversy around the use of artificial sweeteners appears to date back to the early 20th century. Consumers appear to be more conscious of the presence of artificial sweeteners in food compared to other food additives. Extensive research has been conducted on artificial sweeteners in recent years. Furthermore recent studies have shown that there has been in an increase in the consumption of artificially sweetened products. From reviewing the literature, it is clear that there are many important factors to consider when making food choices involving a sweetener.
Introduction:
This literature review will examine the controversial topic of artificial sweeteners. The aim of this review is to contextualise the study by analysing the existing literature pertaining to artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners have gained popularity in recent years because of their low calorific value (Brown et al., 2010). The rationale for undertaking this study is that the Survey of Lifestyles Attitudes and Nutrition (SLÁN) (2007) have emphasised that there is an over consumption of foods high in

Benton (2005) maintains that artificial sweeteners have become popular as a means of controlling diet. Moreover, Mitchell (2006) portrays that artificial sweeteners are primarily used to enhance the nutrition of a foodstuff. Furthermore, the use of artificial sweeteners allows consumers to reduce their calorie/sugar intake, therefore facilitating weight loss or weight management; assist in the control of diabetes; and lastly improve dental and digestive health (O’Brien Nabors, 2011; Mitchell,
As consumers become increasingly health-conscious and aware of the health issues associated with sugary soft drinks, the company has been facing a squeeze on carbonated soft drink growth opportunities. Legal analysis Its unethical because all the businesses which are going down will ask more funds from government. Social
. . . In this issue of the JCI [Journal of Clinical Investigation], Stanhope and colleagues demonstrate that consumption of fructose-sweetened but not glucose-sweetened beverages for 10 weeks increases de novo lipid synthesis, promotes dyslipidemia, impairs insulin sensitivity, and increases visceral adiposity in overweight or obese adults” (Abstract). Fructose sweetener is another way to say high fructose corn syrup. This study proved that fructose sweetened drinks caused harm to the body and signaled a starting point for diseases such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin difficulties, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and ultimately coronary heart disease. Not only does high fructose cause stress on the body, but fructose can also cause serious
When the 1970s introduced High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a cheap sweetener alternative to sucrose in a fructose-glucose liquid form (fifty five percent fructose, forty two percent glucose, and three percent saccharides), it brought extensive numbers of health problems with it (Bray, 2004 & Johnson, 2010 ). Prior to the 70’s, on average, sugar contributed to four percent of daily caloric intake, however over the past four and a half decades, this statistic has increased to whopping sixteen percent, leading some scientist to consider it an “addiction” as they observe the sugar substitute wreak havoc on humans’ bodies worldwide (Butler, 2011). Along with hooking those who indulge sweets to it, High Fructose Corn Syrup also leads to obesity:
Uneducated and unknowing, these traits represent the subset of people who fall victim to those that know the truth. Knowledge is power. This unarguable truth, known by the mass-majority, leaves a population in awe when scandles arise within the food industry. From inhumane practices on animals, to concoctions of chemicals in everyday food, society demands change when information comes through. But, big industries keep a multitude of secrets behind their locked laboratory and factory doors.
Dariana Hernandez 2/11/23 Culminating writing task Do you ever wonder how sugar impacted the world? Well In the book “Sugar Changed the World” By Marina Budhos and Marc Aronson, the authors show us and tell us by showing us illustrations, explaining everything and even the language that they used to describe how it was for the people working in the sugar cane fields and the purpose for writing the book “Sugar Changed the World” is to show how sugar impacted the world in a positive and negative way. Starting off with the illustrations that the authors give us, in those illustrations we can see how the slaves were treated and how hard they had to work in the fields and that helps the reader understand much more and be able to view what the authors are talking about not just read about it. In the book “Sugar Changed the World” on page 28, there is a picture, and that picture shows how the people worked hard in those fields; they even said that they worked under the “hot sun”. This evidence relates to the claim because whether the
It is believed that many of the soft drink companies are the main reason for the rise of obesity in America. As stated in the article Coca-Cola and the fight against the global obesity epidemic, “The soft drink industry as a whole, and Coke in particular, has received harsh criticism for contributing to the global obesity epidemic. ”(Gertner 15).This suggests that as soft drinks and other processed foods are becoming more popular it is heavily contributing to the recent rise in people becoming overweight. Before fast food and soft drinks were popular, less people were obese which leads to the speculation that it is a cause for the problem. On the other hand there are studies that reveal that dietary factors don’t always affect a person’s weight.
What we eat affects not only us, but the animals, and the world. After learning the truth about where and how our meat and food products are prepared and the effects they cause on our bodies, I was shocked and disgusted. As a society, we can make a few small changes that will have a big and healthy impact on the world and how we live. Usually when you think about a cow, you picture a large farm, a red barn and cows eating grass.
Added Sugar Article Reflection In the article from USA Today “Eating too much added sugar may be killing you,” Nanci Hellmich reports that people who consume too much added sugar are at higher risk of death from heart disease than normal people. Hellmich says that too much added sugar affects your body in negative ways and leads to heart disease and death. She supports her claim by stating how many calories from added sugar the American Heart Association recommends getting from added sugars each day, then reveals how many calories from added sugar one regular soda contains, then shows many different statistics about people consuming lots of added sugar having higher-than-normal death rates from heart disease.
Have you ever tried cold Cola from the fridge with a few pieces of lemon and ice, half-lying on your sofa during summer time? That’s super enjoyable, isn’t it? Many people are fond of drinking soft drinks or eating ice-creams every day. But, while soft drinks and ice-creams are easing the summer heat or bringing you taste buds to Cloud 9, they are also making you intake excessive sugar. Over-consumption sugar has many negative effects on human.
That is why many propose regulating the purchases of carbonated drinks pact with sugar, or more commonly known as soda. One can of soda contains about 2.5 tablespoons of sugar, and on average, 9% of the daily calories consumed per person is from soda. Due to the high numbers of obesity in America, soda’s and other drinks high in sugar, should be regulated. Obesity can lead to many health problems. Some issues that can potentially occur because of what the person is eating include diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, body pains, and potential death (in fact, one article in The New York Times claimed sugar, more particularly soda, to “might just be the biggest killers via preventable disease in the country”
The results of the phenol-sulfuric acid analysis conducted in this experiment suggest that the data acquired was relatively precise but inaccurate with respect to the given carbohydrate concentrations of the soda and Gatorade samples. Using a standard curve generated from a glucose solution with a known concentration, the carbohydrate concentration of the samples was determined (in terms of glucose) and a low coefficient of variation was calculated. However, a high percent relative error was apparent in the analysis of both samples. This may have been due to the fact that the analysis was conducted assuming glucose was the carbohydrate of interest, while, in fact, a significant portion of the monosaccharides would have existed as fructose (a
Major corporations such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi have paid many different researchers to conduct test and research favoring sugar. Although many other researches have said the complete opposite. There have been attempts to stop this sugar craze including two researchers Sheldon Reiser and Judith Hallfrisch that discovered more than 30 years ago that sugar could cause health problems and diseases (Hozer). However, they failed to expose the companies because of the great influence the sugar industry has in politics. Every time they said sugar was bad there was an immediate counter-argument that their cases are false.
With the constantly increasing paces of everyday life the search for an energy source, capable of boosting the human body to new limits by extending its endurance, continues. In the recent years a specific product, called an energy drink, has received much publicity worldwide. The energy drink is a highly caffeinated stimulant that is able to rise the performance of the human body. Many people consider it as a refreshment after a hard day’s work. What’s more one of the most frequently used cases of energy drinks is in combination with alcohol during parties.
In today 's society, if we appear to be exhausted, while knowing that we have to be on the run, we turn ourselves to energy drinks. Little do we know that every time we consume a single sip of an energy drink, we are literally creating a crucial complication towards our body. The innumerable quantities of caffeine and sugar that we devour stimulates each and every part of the body. Individuals have been replacing protein bars and other athletic beverages for real food (McCarthy). Becoming addicted to energy drinks relates to type 2 diabetes, even long-term effects such as heart issues, but most of all death.
Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, which include soft drinks, fruit drinks, ice tea, energy and vitamin water drinks across the globe. Regular consumption of sugary sweetened beverages have been associated with weight gain, obesity and diabetes. The role of sugary sweetened beverages in the development of related chronic metabole diseases such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, has not been quantitatively reviewed . How is consuming sugary beverages harmful to the body ?
