CHAPTER TWO 2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 BODY MASSAGE Body massaging is an art that might be as old as mankind, because the holding or rubbing of an injured body part is an instinctive reaction when we are in pain. Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles tendons, and ligaments. Massage involves working and acting on the body with pressure, structured, unstructured, stationary or moving, tension, motion or vibration done manually or with mechanical aids. Target tissue may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, joints or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels or organs of the gastrointestinal system. A massage therapist is someone who has been professionally trained to perform …show more content…
It is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles). When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist uses massage oil and often uses direct deep pressure. Muscles must be relaxed in order for the therapist to reach the deeper musculature. At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain. It is important to tell the massage therapist when things hurt and if any soreness or pain you experience is outside your comfort range .There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may recommend applying ice to the area after the

Stress comes from overpressures in daily life, lack of sleep and emotional burdens. A Massage Therapist’s use of healing touch affects not only the musculoskeletal structures, but also the nervous system, which in effect causes changes in the systemic reactions of the entire body. According to Marc White, the executive director of the Canadian Institute for the Relief of Pain and Disability, “Research shows that massage therapy including remedial exercise can reduce pain, anxiety and stress, improve joint movement, sleep and ones quality of life.” (https://www.rmtbc.ca/sites/default/files/files/ImprovingBCHealth_Dv(1).pdf).
Petrissage helps to loosen the muscle fibres, this technique involves kneading the injured area, one hand pulling one way and the other hand pulling the other way. Stripping the muscle, this helps to remodel the scar tissue by the thumb working deep on the muscle in the direction of the blood flow. Lastly Circular frictions can be applied, this helps to break down scar tissue and realign in. This type of massage helps to smooth out tight muscle knots so that the patient is comfier and more

Identification of the problem is the first step. Sports massage therapists are often the first to notice the problems. Some injuries that a sports massage therapist might be able to help with are: sprains, strains, plantar fasciitis, and tendinitis. - Bodywork can improve flexibility. Most of the time a sports massage is spent with the massage therapist stretching the body parts to improve joint flexibility and relieve joint pain.
There may have been animosity between the two medical experts in the past but this has long been resolved. Doctors may have looked at chiropractors as an inferior group as shown by the leadership of 1940s American medical association who referred to them as cute and playful but lethal. However, these strong sentiments have changed over the past two decades as the significance of chiropractors has been felt in areas where conventional medicine failed. Chiropractors have gained a considerable stand in the medical world. 4.
When I get to go into high school there is going to be a widening area of places and things to do for life latter on such as preparing for a job. One of my favorites of the few jobs I have researched so far has been a Massage Therapist. A massage therapist is a person who gives massages, either light of for deep tissue, to relieve stress, muscle aches, and maybe even help people with brain issues to get better of function more normally. Before you go and get into the fancy stuff though, you must go to school and get a Postsecondary non degree award.
If the body part is swollen, it usually becomes painful to the touch. Ice is used for treating acute injuries which are injuries that happened some few minutes ago. An ice pack will help to stop the flow of blood in the affected area and reduce inflammation and pain by reducing the sensation around the area. But applying heat to a new injury is a recipe for chaos. Not only will it be painful, but it will also lead to more bleeding and muscle spasms, causing the victim a lot of discomfort and pain.
Many times when the body experiences an injury, a natural defense system is to protect the injury by stopping the muscles around it from moving. They act almost like a splint to keep the area immobilized. When this happens, the muscles can become stiff. A massage therapist can work these muscles and get the blood flowing more freely again. Choosing a therapist who is experienced in this type of massage can be found in several different ways.
Infant Massage is a parenting practice that has been passed down from ancestors all over the world including places such as India, Africa, South America, and Asia. Infant massage came to be in the United States by Vimala Schneider McClure in the 1970’s. While in India, McClure observed mothers practicing massage on their infants and saw that it had a positive effect. McClure then went on to found the International Association of Infant Massage. She spread the word about infant massage and helped new mothers learn the importance of using these new techniques in caring for their children (McClure).
Physical Therapy Physical Therapists provide rehabilitation for injuries and help maintain stability. “Some history of Physical Therapist formed their first professional association in 1921 called the American Women’s physical therapeutic association. In the late 1940s, the association had changed its name to the American Physical Therapy Association. Physical Therapy was developed when the association’s membership swelled to 8,000 and the number of physical therapy education programs across the US increased from 16 to 39”(“APTA History”). Although many people may think being a physical therapist is hard because of the qualifications needed, the daily work, salary, and needs of the service have drawn my attention to the field.
