This research study is conducted within an International Baccalaureate (IB) world school situated in Malaysia, teaching students at the early childhood level. .The students of my research study are from the Reception class, aged four to six years old. As a researcher I have being working for the past four years and have developed a keen interest in the field of early childhood education. The school offers all three IB programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students aged from three years old to ten years old, the Middle Programme (MYP) students aged from eleven to fifteen years old and the Diploma Programme (DP) for students aged from sixteen to seventeen years old. The study closely examines and analyses the effectiveness of the teachers’ preparation in the use of this pedagogy, creating learning opportunities for all (ESL) students regardless of their ethnicity and to help improve their language proficiency. This research aim is to study how this pedagogy can help to target students in developing their social and communication skills in learning English as a second language. The strengths and limitations of this pedagogy will also be examined. According to House (2005) argues and states that English language has become the lingua franca of today and it is an official language to many countries which it does not endanger multilingualism.
The research question is designed based on the teachers’ knowledge, beliefs and experiences of the effectiveness of play-based learning in the early childhood classrooms of the school I work in. What are the strengths and limitations of play-based provision and practice, including assessment practice, for children learning English as a second or additional language in the reception class of an International school ?
2. How effectively the play-based strategy improves the social and communication skills of the target group? The research method I would use in collecting qualitative data is to conduct an interview with the four teachers from the early childhood classroom to analyses and interpret the effectiveness of play-based learning. The four participants will be interviewed based on their reliability and validity of gaining information based on the benefits of play based pedagogy in the early childhood
