LITERATURE REVIEW The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as the people’s access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food in order to maintain a healthy and active life. Food security is an issue that is linked to health, economic development, environment, and trade. Some argue that (a) food is unequally distributed; (b) global trade is the cause of paramount national trade; (c) future food needs can or cannot be met by current levels of production; and (d) globalization may or may not lead to the continuation of food insecurity and poverty in rural communities. According to Vogel and Smith (2002), the cause of hunger in South Africa is because of the inadequate access to food, not due to food shortage.
