Commonly known as a “gun type bomb” the Little Boy bomb devastated the city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. This was know as the “gun type bomb” because it actually contained a gun inside of the nuclear bomb. This weapon was a big risk for the B-29’s because it was the first ever atomic bomb dropped. Also, the bomb was wide ranged so the pilot who dropped the bomb felt some of the explosion. Little Boy was followed by an explosion of the Fat Boy bomb just three days later south of Hiroshima. The Little Boy Bomb weighed about 9,700 pounds when it was filled with its highly enriched Uranium. The bomb costed 2000 million dollars. It was about 10 feet long and 28 inches wide. The Little Boy Bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945 at 8:15 a.m. After the bomb was dropped by …show more content…
“Hiroshima does not look like a bombed city. It looks as if monster steamroller has passed over it and squashed it out of existence” (Wilfred Burchett). This quote tells how bad of an effect the bomb had on the city and people. About 150,000 people were killed on August of 1945 in Hiroshima. Most people died of radiation, burns, and the explosion. A common injury was Keloids; raised scars from the burns of the bomb. Another fatal thing that happens to some people are cataracts. A cataract is when the lens of your eye becomes opaque, resulting in blurred vision. The effects on the town were very bad. The cemeteries were uprooted, the churches and houses were burned down, and even the T-bridge’s barrier was knocked away. People say they don't know why Japan doesn’t hate America for dropping the A-bomb. If I lived in Hiroshima, I would be terrified and very mad at America for dropping Little Boy. On August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered because they couldn't take it anymore. About 227,000 survivors from The Little Boy bomb, and Fat boy bomb; (bomb let off just days later in Nagasaki) are alive
The U.S. tested the first bomb on July 16, 1945 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Once they saw the power this bomb had and what it was capable of, they decided to use it against Japan. On August 6, 1954 the first ever atomic bomb was dropped over Japan’s city Hiroshima. This explosion abolished 90 percent of the city and assassinated
Shinji Mikamo, a 19 year old boy who lives in Hiroshima was removing tiles on the top of his roof when the bomb was dropped over the city. Because of his location, Mikamo was only ¾ of a mile away from the epicenter of the bomb, so he was left very unprotected from the harsh impact of the bomb. In an excerpt from Rising from the ashes: A true story of survival and forgiveness from Hiroshima, Mikamo states that after the bomb, “There was only destruction, smoke, and fire” (Document G: Survivor of Hiroshima). The short term effects that the dropping of the bomb had immediately had on the city of Hiroshima was indescribable. Everything on site had collapsed except for steel
The atomic bomb, also known as the Little Boy, was dropped from the B-29 aircraft Enola Gay and had the equivalence to 15 tons of TNT or about thirteen kilotons of force. Hiroshima was home to about 290,000 citizens and around 49,000 soldiers, about half of which were killed in the physical bombing and exposure to radiation over a 4 month period. The idea for bombing of Hiroshima, also code named Operation Centerboard, was put into idea by the United States during after the defeat of Nazi Germany, while the Japanese Pacific war continued on. The United States wanted to force Japan to surrender as soon as

This bombing raid was extra-ordinary, because unlike the previous bombing raids, which consisted of large numbers of planes, this bomb was delivered by a single plane flying solo above the city. The reason people came out of their shelters to watch is because the plane delivered the bomb on a parachute, thinking it was just a harmless scouting plane, the citizens resumed back to their normal every-day life before it detonated. Previously bombing raids delivered fire bombs, which were different as they mainly targeted the wooden infrastructure and agricultural aspects of Japan, rather than the innocent citizens who could escape and rebuild a life. This cause of dropping the bomb destroyed everything, living or not, with extreme heat and radiation.
On August 6, 1945 the Enola Gay dropped the 9,700 pound atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The effects of "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" are controversial as to whether the bombs were necessary. ”Little Boy” housed the isotope Uranium-235 and “Fat Man” housed Plutonium-239. These elements went through nuclear fission in which the nucleus of an atom is broken into smaller pieces or split. During the end of World War II Japan was out of control.
1. Immediate Aftermath On August 6, 1945, at 8:15 a.m., an atomic bomb by the name of “Little Boy” detonated 1,900 feet above the city of Hiroshima. The bomb exploded directly above the Shima Surgical Clinic with the force of about 16 kilotons of TNT, causing the burst temperature to exceed 1 million degrees Celsius and creating a massive fireball measuring 840 feet in diameter. The explosion killed an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 and injured a similar number.
The Effects of the Atomic Bombing on Survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki The detonation of both atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki not only destroyed both Japanese cities and resulted in over 199,000 casualties , but left an abominable effect on the health and lives of the atomic bomb survivors. Thanks to 280,000 survivors and organizations created, numerous amounts of research was done to understand the health effects caused mostly by the exposure to unsafe amounts of radiation. The research of effects on Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors is the longest and largest medical study in history; effects of the atomic bomb included long term health issues, immediate injuries, and discrimination against the survivors. To begin with, one
In Nagasaki the effects were bad but not nearly as bad as Hiroshima. But were still devastating. After the bombed dropped more than 40% of the city was destroyed. Schools, homes, hospitals, churches had simply disappeared off the face of the earth. Survivors of the day were quoted on the horrible experience one said, “It was just a normal day in the city I have spent my whole life, and out of the blue my life changed for ever.
Hiroshima suffered a huge loss to the affects of the Americans releasing the atomic
The first bomb wiped out about 90% of Hiroshima, after the nuclear explosion 40,000 more people began to die from the radiation from the bomb. The second bombing which was on Nagasaki happened August 9th only
A little over year later, Harry Truman, the President of the United States gave the orders to drop the bomb on Japan in hopes of bringing World War II to a decisive end. August 6, 1945, the “Little Boy” was dropped in Hiroshima, Japan. The end result of the Manhattan project was an explosion equivalent to 15 kilotons of
To illustrate the destructive effect of the atomic bomb, On August 6, 1945, during World War II (1939-45), an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people; tens of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure. Three days later, a second B-29 dropped another A-bomb on Nagasaki, killing an estimated 40,000 people. Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s unconditional surrender in World War II in a radio address on August 15, citing the devastating power of “a new and most cruel bomb.” Hiroshima’s devastation failed to elicit immediate Japanese surrender, however, and on August 9 Major Charles Sweeney flew another B-29 bomber, Bockscar, from Tinian.
The bomb caused extreme and excessive damage to the city. It devastated homes, buildings, schools, etc. Nearly all buildings were either damaged or completely destroyed. A total of around 70,000 of 76,000 buildings were affected by the bomb. 48,000 buildings were raised and unrepairable (Tibbots, Paul, Curtis LeMay)
There were 2 atomic bomb that was dropped in the World War II. The 2 atomic bombs is called The Fat Man and The Little Boy. Little boy was dropped on the city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. An American B-29 (a type of plane) called the "Enola Gay" was piloted by Paul W. Tibbets, dropped a uranium atomic bomb that is called The Little Boy, the bomber dropped the world’s first atomic bomb with its name Little Boy on Hiroshima, Hiroshima was Japan's seventh largest city. In minutes, half of the city was destroyed.
