Have you ever wondered what it was like working on Oahu, Hawaii in the 1800’s? In this essay, i will be writing what it was like back then, i will be writing about living conditions, working conditions, and gender differences. The immigrants, workers, planters (owners),came to work and live on the sugar plantations in Hawaii 1800s. The reason why they came was to fill workers because there was not enough people in Hawaii due to disease and plantation/ business was booming. The workers were offered a place to live and food and money. The living conditions in Oahu Hawaii were horrible because they lived in unsanitary work camps, and they were segregated by race. Living conditions were also bad because they only made three dollars a month and had the charges they needed to pay, workers also had to hike up filed and some had bad backs. According to source one it says” housing conditions, jobs, wage differ according to race. The management and skilled jobs were held by white. The lunas and camp policeman were mostly Portuguese and Hawaiian. The worst jobs were given by Asians. This means that they whole future was determined by their race and it's unfair to have different jobs that are good or bad determined by the color of their skin it's unfair that Asians had the worst job while other races had good jobs. Working conditions were also bad because they had to hike to go to work and some had bad backs.According to source one it says “.
