“I say God is dead!” (Miller 119). What a strong saying coming from a man who
lives up to his word, a man who doesn’t believe in lying, a man who is trying to save his
honor. In the play ‘The Crucible,’ Arthur Miller shows that there were many trials for
Salem residents who got accused of witchcraft. John Proctor is arrested for conspiracy of
Witchcraft. John can either lie and confess and live, or get lynched. John is the man who
says that living up to a lie, to save your life, is not worth loosing your faith and honor in
yourself.
In the beginning, John’s wife, Elizabeth, was arrested for conspiracy of
Witchcraft because Abigail and her little “pets” accused her. Elizabeth and John both
knew very well that Abigail is making all this up just so she can get John for herself.

John told her this:
“If she is condemned, this will be the end of me!” (Miller ). John loved his wife very
much. Loosing her would be like loosing is faith and his life. So John tries everything in
his power to save his family. He does this because he has faith that Elizabeth will still
love him and that if he saves her, he will keep his honor.
Later on, John was arrested and was going to be condemned. The night before,
Abigail found him in his cell and asked if he would run away with her and meet her on a
boat. John didn’t like it that much and stated: “it is not on a boat we will meet again, but
in hell.” (Miller ). John would not run away with the girl who is causing him to loose his
life and loose his wife. He will be condemned rather than holding a lie and running away.
After being arrested, at first, John agreed to sign a document saying he was
involved in witchcraft. However, after signing it and knowing that it will be placed on the
church wall he changed his mind. He stated: “Because it is my name! Because I cannot
have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies!” (Miller ) John did not
Vincent O'Sullivan once said, “If you are different from the rest of the flock, they bite you” (O’Sullivan 2). In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, many feared for their lives. They would do what they needed to, to not get the noose. In Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, Puritan minister Reverend Parris finds a group of girls dancing naked in the forest. Among them is his niece Abigail and daughter his daughter Betty, who faints upon being discovered by her father.
Is she to blame? In The Crucible there are several people that could be blamed for the unfortunate events that happened in Salem. However, as usual there is this one character that takes part in more than one incriminating situation. For instance, Abigail took part in an affair with John Proctor.
"God does not need my name nailed upon the church!... God knows how black my sins are" (Miller 142). John did not want his lies to be hung on the church wall because he constructed the church to what it had become, and to him that would have been
Summary: • The short essay titled Salvation is about how Langston Huges lied his way out of a predicament. Langston was in church to see Jesus. He waited and waited, till he figure out he can’t see or feel Jesus. Langston was pressured to show everyone in church he seen Jesus.
This showed that he was trying to keep his name clean by telling the truth. When John was in prison, they give him another chance to be freed of charges. They tried to persuade him
He was given the choice to either confess to being apart of witchcraft and be spared or not confess and get hanged. He is allowed to talk this over with his wife and at first they decide it would be better to confess even though they know he didn’t do anything! At this point in the play John realizes that it is not the right thing to do. He says “ How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul now give me your name.”
Have you ever heard the saying that, “you cannot turn a whore into a housewife”? That is exactly what Abigail Williams wanted John Proctor to do. Abigail, mistress of John, tried her best to use her lying, manipulating, and whore-like ways to get herself out of trouble; not only with John, but all throughout the community. She constantly displayed her despicable ways all during the whole play. Most of all, Abigail was a liar; all within the play, she revealed all of her lying ways.
“I never knew such goodness in the world.” (p. 118) The words I spoke to John in the last few moments of his life ring in my head on this mournful day. I only have little time here with you before I make my way back to Salem, but I would give anything to speak of my dear John today.
One of the most powerful human emotions is desire. Everyone is constantly trying to fulfill their own desires. A desire or passion may be so strong it can conflict with morality. (…) She wants me dead John, you know it!” (Miller 57). Even when Elizabeth pleads to John, warning him, he still shrugs it off as nothing, because he believes his extramarital affair wasn’t a big deal, this also ties into his arrogance in believing that no harm can come to his family. Any sane person would realize the potential outcome and try to reason with him about the accusations.
(Miller. 1. 539-540). In committing these actions with Abigail John cheated on his wife and used Abigal purely for pleasure and gave her false hope that there was a connection between the two of them. Furthermore, John is filled with anger when Mary Warren goes against his word and tells him she will
