I grew up in Long Beach, New York which is located approximately 45 minutes away from Manhatten. Long Beach is a tourist town and our small four square mile town doubled in population, from 33,000 to 60,000 people over the summer months. Growing up by the beach was something I took for granted at the time because I was not aware of what a luxury that was until I moved to the middle of Indiana for college. There are two main things you can do in Long Beach and that is going to the beach or eating out. Other than that the town is fairly uneventful. Jane Long had a rough start of life but a great ending that changed the history of Texas for good. Jane Long was born on July 23, 1798 as the tenth child of her big family. Jane’s father, Capt. William Mackall, fought in the revolutionary war before she was born but died in 1799. In 1811 her mother, Ann Herbert Wilkinson, moved their family to Mississippi but died soon after in 1812 making Jane an orphan at age 14.
I moved to Point Pleasant when I was in fourth grade. I was scared, afraid and I didn’t know what to make of my new town and school. As the years went on Point Pleasant began to feel like home. Throughout the years of living here, out of all the PTO events there is one that will always stand out. In fifth grade the PTO sponsored a pool party open to the fifth grade of Nellie Bennett.
As Mckenna, Emily, and I arrived late at the Long Beach Board Meeting, I was instantly transported to my senior year of high school. As ASB Vice President, I attended the Alhambra Board Meetings, and just like with Long Beach, there’s always traffic in Southern California. When I stepped into the board meeting, I was surprised, and relieved, to see that the entire meeting was being filmed; Alhambra Board Meetings were never filmed. The implementation of technology in Long Beach speak towards the city’s funding, transparency, and community interest.
The 1980s was the beginning of technology and what it will become, iconic music, movies, and television shows that will lead the way for the upcoming years. Computers were making progress at a very fast rate and would now be seen in someone’s home. Phones could now be carried in your pocket and music videos were on MTV. The songs, movies, and TV shows would become very well known even today.
