One major hurdle that we had to overcome would be the struggle against racism and slavery. We've had many disputes about this problem, one being the American Civil War. The Civil War was a battle between the Northern and Southern states over the issue of slavery. Many long and short-term events factored into this vital event in history like the Louisiana Purchase which expanded the country west and generated the craving to bring slavery to these places. The Cotton Gin invented by Eli Whitney was a machine that was able to quickly separate cotton fibers from the seeds, this made work faster and more productive. Although this invention affected the South in many helpful ways the biggest effect of the Cotton Gin was the civil war. The Cotton Gin was a big demand in the South because cotton and agriculture were what the economy relied on. The invention needed people to work the cotton gin therefore, the South needed an abundance of slaves. The population of enslaved people was far larger in the South than in the North as seen in this map showing the distribution of the population of enslaved people in the United States, in 1861 shown on the map below (Map of Enslaved 1861). This is why the South was so enraged because they relied on them to help benefit their economy. One problem that should be highlighted is the unfair treatment of black men in the justice system. One out of every three black boys born today can be expected to be sentenced to prison at one point in their life compared to one out of 17 white boys. In the link below his fact from the NAACP shows just how unfair the justice system is to people of color. The justice systems are in place to protect people and make sure that their freedom is safe.
