The gold chain in the novel Long Way Down, is full of symbolism and importance. We see this repeated and repeated many times throughout the book. When looking deeper, the chain represents masculinity. This includes manhood, and any qualities associated with it. Masculinity is important to Will and his community, it drives Will to act in whatever way he thinks is most masculine. First look at the rules the men of Wills community live by, No crying. Long Way Down Persuasive Essay Long Way Down, a novel written by Jason Reynolds, is a story about a 15 year old boy named Will who would like to avenge his dead brother Shawn who was killed in gun violence. Will has an option though. He goes into the elevator with 7 floors, and on each floor he is greeted by people he knew before they died. He is then told a story about why gun violence was so bad in their situations. At the end of the novel, we never really find out what Will had decided since it ended with a decision that only Will could make.

You may wonder how people live with power, loyalty, revenge, and fear. Almost every character that was killed in Long Way Down sought revenge and got it, then they faced the consequences of being killed. The story states “There's a code of conduct, and what those rules are is number one, no crying, number two, no snitching, number three, always seek revenge.”, cited on page 31.
Revenge is a real thing in today’s society. It happens every day. There are different reasons for revenge from as small, as a small child stealing a stick of gum to a drug dealer murdering a nark. Regardless, taking revenge in itself may be for the greater good, or evil.

I wanted to show one of the greatest pieces in the book which was Bri’s father's gold chain. This means a lot because it was the first thing he bought when he got paid for this song. So it meant a lot to Bri as well. If Bri didn’t continue believing in herself and following in the footsteps of her father she would've never come this far. So, I put gold chains in the spine of the book to replicate the gold chain of Bri’s father.
