Long Way Down Persuasive Essay Long Way Down, a novel written by Jason Reynolds, is a story about a 15 year old boy named Will who would like to avenge his dead brother Shawn who was killed in gun violence. Will has an option though. He goes into the elevator with 7 floors, and on each floor he is greeted by people he knew before they died. He is then told a story about why gun violence was so bad in their situations. At the end of the novel, we never really find out what Will had decided since it ended with a decision that only Will could make. Mikey Holloman did something very regrettable except he could never fix those mistakes he made. Mikey Holloman had a second reason for being the most influential impact on his son Will. My supporting quote is “I couldn’t kiss your mother, couldn’t kiss you boys goodnight. Just lay naked in the scummy bathtub, the cold porcelain keeping me from sleep. From nightmares.” pg. 216 -Mikey Holloman. The significance of this quote shows you that when you do something wrong and unchangeable, like shooting someone you will feel a horrible amount of regret and guilt. You are never able to get someone's life back once you take it away from them. Also my quote shows that once you make an unchangeable decision like shooting someone, you will distance yourself from socializing and the people that you truly love because when you make a regrettable decision, you just can't be completely normal and act like nothing happened, that's a really difficult thing to do. My second supporting quote is “My father looked at me with hollow eyes dancing between guilt and grief, which I couldn’t make sense of until my father admitted that he killed the wrong guy.” As you could tell by this selected quote Mikey felt nothing but guilt and regret till the day he died. Mikey already knows the regrettable pain of shooting the wrong person so he wouldn't want his own son Will to also make a decision which he would later regret.
