Almost every character that was killed in Long Way Down sought revenge and got it, then they faced the consequences of being killed. The story states “There's a code of conduct, and what those rules are is number one, no crying, number two, no snitching, number three, always seek revenge.”, cited on page 31. Betrayal and revenge can be powerful motivators in a story. Legend by Marie Lu follows June Iparis and Daniel Wing, also known as Day, living in the Republic. The Republic forces children to take a test called a Trial when they reach a certain age, so while June scored perfectly, Day scored below average, forcing him to run away from his family to live as a criminal on the streets. When June’s brother is killed, everyone suspects Day as the culprit. The Republic sends June undercover to find and arrest Day for his crimes.
In the novel, Fools Crow, written by James Welch, the act of revenge is shown numerous times and is an underlying theme throughout. These acts of revenge reflect the Blackfeet way of life. Yellow Kidney, Owl Child, and the rest of the tribe all show signs of revenge and each express it in their own way. This is especially prevalent with Yellow Kidney and Owl Child as they seem to be constantly seeking revenge of some sort. Yellow Kidney wanted revenge on Fast Horse throughout the novel.

The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe is a story of revenge, narrated by a man named Montresor, who felt he had been wrong by another man, Fortunato. Two of the conditions this narrator gives in order for his revenge to be seen as successful in his own eyes are to punish with impunity, and to make himself known as the avenger by his victim. To punish with impunity is to punish someone without being caught and to make oneself known is to let the victim know they are being punished. In the narrator's own words, he says that without those two things, the wrong is "unredressed," which basically means not successfully avenged. In the case of this story, Montresor completes neither of his objectives of "punishing with impunity" and making himself felt as the avenger to whoever did him wrong.
