The L.R.A. is a militia in Uganda lead by a man named Joseph Kony. The L.R.A., which stands for the Lord’s Resistance Army, is made up of soldiers who are both children and adults. These soldiers are often forced to join the L.R.A. by a group of people who are current members of the Lord’s Resistance Army. Members of the L.R.A. may also be called rebels which comes from their decision to rebel against the government. All members of the L.R.A. were often forced to work for Joseph as soldiers after being captured by rebels or other workers of Joseph Kony. Also, children were abducted by members of the L.R.A. all over Uganda to be used as slaves for labor and sex under Joseph Kony. Joseph Kony raised world wide tension as his rebel group by the …show more content…
Joseph Kony is the current leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda and was the man who started this militia as well. The Lord’s Resistance Army is also the most known and violent rebel group in all of Africa. The L.R.A. was started by Joseph Kony as a sign of rebellion and frustration with the government. Kony gradually took over the Holy Spirit Movement and reorganized it into the Lord’s Resistance Army. As Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army continued to rebel, the government of Uganda struggled to put a stop to Kony. The government struggled to put a stop to Kony because of the weakness in their Army and the strength in Kony’s militia. The L.R.A consisted of over 30,000 children which have all been abducted or kidnapped by Joseph Kony’s group. The main reason behind Kony’s rebellion was his early life and how his relatives had an influence on him. Alice Lakwena was the guardian of Joseph Kony during his childhood and had a large impact on his future. Kony’s guardian Alice Lakwena was originally the leader of the Holy Spirit Movement which Joseph eventually took over. The reasoning behind Kony’s rebellion was his guardian Alice Lakwena and hopefully with the ending of the L.R.A. and Joseph Kony’s work, there will be no more kidnapping or militias as large as the L.R.A. to worry …show more content…
The L.R.A. began to spread throughout countries like Sudan and DRC. As the spread began throughout countries like Sudan and DRC they struggled to put a stop to Kony’s work for several reasons. The main reason behind struggle for Uganda, DRC, and Sudan is a lack of money and soldiers. Kony has abducted so many children throughout the years that it was hard for governments to recruit children to join their army and fight the fight to end Joseph Kony. A warrant was eventually put into place in the year 2005 for the arrest of Joseph Kony. This warrant was put into place by the International Criminal Court as a helping hand for the countries of Uganda, Sudan, and DRC. The warrant placed on Joseph Kony was distributed under the accounts of mass murder and gross violations throughout the years that he has worked with the LRA. The countries Sudan, Uganda, and DRC launched Operation Lightning Thunder that targeted the L.R.A and inflicted considerable losses on its forces. These countries inforced this strategy after being forced to end their support for the Lord’s Resistance Army. Even though there were many casualties to the L.R.A., Joseph Kony was still not captured. The large amount of soldiers that Kony has working for him helped greatly to protect him from the government and being captured which enabled the continuation of the
“A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier” is a moving war story about the author, Ishmael Beah, and his life growing up in the african country. Sierra Leone is the setting during the civil war which spanned from March of 1991 to January of 2002. Ishmael provides a stance against child soldiers, and has stuck with that view ever since he was rehabilitated. This book presents strong first hand encounters and vivid war stories. This helps prove the argument that child soldiering is a cruel act, and by using rehabilitation, victims would be able to return to regular life.
Women had to be housewives and raise children. In the late 1700’s women started to work and leave the house. 10.) Was inspired by the Enlightenment ideals. Superiority of republican self-government helped in the creation of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense.
Both the RUF and the Sierra Leone Army threatened anyone who did comply with death. The RUF would often kill civilians to make an example for new recruits and to eliminate any family they once had “We are going to initiate all of you by killing these people in front of you” (Beah 34) doing so would allow them to control them more and eliminate any threat of them running away. The military would kick anyone out of their bases that would not join their ranks which would lead to them being shot by rebels “But you will not have rations or stay in this village…the rebels will kill anyone from this village” (Beah 106), this would leave the children with only on choice, to join that faction.
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of A Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah is a memoir of his experiences as a soldier during the civil war in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa that had a civil war that lasted from 1991 till 2002. The war started when Revolutionary United Front (RUF) attempted to overthrow the Joseph momoh government. The war resulted in over 50,000 deaths. During the civil war, children as young as seven years old were recruited to serve in the army but they weren't really recruited at all, they were threatened to join or they would be killed or kidnapped.
So much had happened, there was a lot of violence and killing and well pretty much anything that can destroy you. Then there was an assassination that lead to more violence which then cause El Chapo to go and hide. El Chapo was then all over the news so he went to different place to just avoid the people who were trying to kill him. While El Chapo was hiding, he would go and meet one of his unkown associates and give him money to go and provide his family what they needed in case of his absences (Fusion). El Chapo knew what was going to happen
Were they coerced by their superiors? In December 1999, Kenyan based newspaper “African News” dispatched journalist Linda De Hoyos to comment on the bloodshed. Two female childcare workers who give support to

Ishmael Beah feared becoming a child soldier again when Sierra Leone’s government was overthrown by the rebels, he gets haunted by the memories of the past and what has happened throughout his life back in Sierra Leone. Back when he was a child soldier in Sierra Leone all he did in his free time was take in drugs and watched war movies which got him use to the blood and violence that he experienced while he was part of the war. He committed crimes that nobody would normally do, like torturing others in cruel ways, but he was brainwashed and didn’t know anything else besides war. He was trained to kill and that’s all there was to it for his life back then. But that changed once he got rehabilitated and was able to live among normal civilians.
El Chapo quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the most known and powerful drug lords
In 1969, a young man in South Los Angeles named Raymond Washington, founded a gang called the Crips. Soon after, in response, rival gangs banned together to form the Bloods. In subsequent years, these two gangs divided Los Angeles into a patchwork of blue and red territories. These were not the street toughs of an earlier generation. Fist fights were a thing of the past.
The same applies to the children of Sierra Leone, where they were separated from their families—however, these children will never end up finding their families, they will never have a happy life again, and will never remember how it felt to be loved or cared for by someone. The 1991 Sierra Leonean civil war split children from their families and forced them to survive on their own—without any supervision. Many children were either captured by the rebels or were forced to join the military and fight the rebels. Nearly all “strong” children forced to endure many painful situations and commit immoral acts. All children who were not recruited were killed because they were too “weak”.
Parmentier WOSSE 18-003 INSURGENCY The Revolutionary war was a catalyst to bring a nation together and introduce insurgency and guerilla tactics to help beat a more formidable opponent. Insurgency tactics used by the militia brought the British Army to a point of shame, by disrupting and wearing down the fighting spirit of the British. We will look at the first insurgency and how militiamen, made of farmers and tradesmen, used insurgency, and guerilla tactics, to wear down the British army and help the Colonial army, win the war.
Some of those kids were abused and some were abused sexually. But some kids probably ran away from home if they were. No child deserves to go through that. Some of the orphans were sent back to New York and for some of the orphans they were known as “Street Arabs” and that’s not good. Some of those orphans ended up joining gangs and others survived by making very little money.
“The walking began again. Walking – but to where? Not home. There is still war everywhere in Sudan. Not back to Ethiopia the soldiers would shoot us.”(79)
Stabbing someone in the back is a relatively simple task, especially when they are too immature to know what hit them. The civil war in Sierra Leone, lasting from 1991 to 2002, was one of the most gruesome civil wars to date. Unfortunately, it is also overwhelmingly unknown to many American adolescents. This horrifying ordeal in Sierra Leone featured hundreds of children becoming mass murderers, whilst still in their pre-teen years.
