When Dade eventually caught the woman, he was quite surprised and ecstatic, during the long awaited walk to the stockroom he saw his mother crying behind the register, and his father told him that he would be there soon. “I felt good and strong” (Canin, 16). When Dade and the woman finally arrive to the stockroom he looked around and saw the sign that read “DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE?”(Canin, 16), but didn’t know what to say to her. Then all of a sudden Daded asks the question “Do you want to go out the back”(Canin, 16).
He is astonished by himself; who is he to judge whether someone gets to live or die? He tells himself, “No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer… Others come along and still others, and the first ones kill the second ones and they the next ones and it goes on like this until everything is a sea of blood.” At this moment the barber is able to distinguish the difference between himself and captain Torres. He realizes, “I don’t want to be a murderer, no sir.

[He] does not notice the police car… follow him.” This one event, mixed with the stereotype the protagonist has thrown upon him by the cop, seals his fate. All three of these situations foreshadow the ironic and deadly situation that the poor lost man is about to find himself involved. It is these subtle hints to his death that not only add suspense to the plot, but also hold a key importance in conflict development. W.D. Valgardson uses many great elements of fiction to build plot and conflict, as well as teach the lesson of not making snap judgments in his short story Identities.
Vengeance has been an ongoing problem for many centuries. In the long run, with the new generation, they have been following the same pattern to get revenge, without knowing the reasons why. If no one is willing to stop and think it over, to evaluate if it’s worth the risk, then the act of vengeance will be ongoing at the cost of many lives. Many people do not realize that having to avenge the death of a loved one will take so much time and patience in their lives. In the short story, “An Act of Vengeance,” by Isabel Allende, the issue involves a young girl who gets raped by Tadeo Cespedes, whom also killed her father on the same day.

The criminal, Sebastian’s grave robbing accomplice, speaks with a distinct voice littered with curse words and the use of ‘kid’. His pressing tone helps to drive the story forward, however when he first speaks, he does not use the word ‘to’, yet in later places in the text he does. Although this is not a major discrepancy, by ensuring that the grave robber’s voice is consistent throughout, the character seems even more realistic. Additionally, Sebastian’s character is well-developed, and his motivations are effectively revealed through flashbacks and his actions. For example, when the grave robber presses Sebastian on his relationship with Daisy, Sebastian changes from sarcastic to angry then murderous.
