Even though the feeling of love is perceived in very different ways, it can be divided into four main kinds of love. While they definitely all bring the feeling of affection and care with them, they can be distinguished especially by the position and relationship two people have to another. The Greek words eros, philia, storge and agape are used to determine them in the New Testament.
The first kind of love is Eros, which is created by sexual desire. Nowadays the idea of this true appreciation of pleasure is seen in a quite romantic way, as many people yearn to 'fall madly in love ' with someone. And yet, eros is said to be an irrational form of love, channeled by animal-like instincts. For instance, the famous fictional couple Rose Bukater and Jack Dawson, who are the main characters in the film Titanic, demonstrate the passion involved

Philia is based on the concept of friendship and is said to be a very strong form of love. Furthermore it enables people to see the worth of a relationship they might have with people they share interests with. The reason why many people value philia so much is the idea of it being the only form of love freely chosen. Secondly, the sense of companionship brings many admirable traits, such as loyalty and the willingness of sacrificing for your friends, with it. In like manner, the love between family members can also resemble that of friends, making it part philia too. A great example of a strong friendship is that of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series. Regardless of knowing he will be teased if he does Harry choses Ron’s friendship over that of very influential children. They have similar character traits and later stay close friends throughout their school time. Accordingly they are both prepared to sacrifice their life for the other person, first seen when Ron puts himself in grave danger after one year of friendship with Harry, in order to let Harry go

In contrast our “Eros” which creates love,
All of the speakers speeches about love in the Symposium are important because they each have a unique idea to contribute about what is love and the idea of love. One of the speakers, Pausanias goes after Phaedrus’ speech. When it is his turn to speak he present his speech about love as not a single thing and therefore we shouldn’t praise it since there is more than one. Pausanias states that there are two kinds of love, he claims that since “there are two kinds of Aphrodite, there must also be two loves” (Symposium 13). The first Aphrodite is called Uranian or Heavenly Aphrodite since she is the daughter of Uranus, she is the oldest and has no mother.
Eros is an erotic love, a love that is put on by the flesh. It is a false love that is based out of feelings and
Love in general means have a warm heart feeling for people between man and women. A healthy relationship means a warm relationship that cannot brother by other important event. Both man and women respect each other simply. The book Drown was written by Junot Diaz which was published on 1996. It was a collection of many stories.
In the speech of Diotima, she questions Socrates way of looking at love, Socrates said that love was something beautiful and good. Diotima describes love as needing happiness in order to have that love fulfilled; She thinks that happiness comes when one has beautiful and good things around them. Diotima describes love at the beginning of her speech, she says love was born when Aphrodite was born, Diotima also says that love is hardship and overcoming that hardship is what brings happiness to ones life. Love is described as a person, a person who has needs and desires, a person who is smart and always on the look out for opportunities. She always describes Love or Eros as being neither mortal or immortal, Love or as it is personified is the
His past experiences has led him to believe that love should be masked by lies that in a sense it should the truth should be a voluntary definition behind love. In Plato’s Symposium, Aristophanes’ delivers a speech about his experiences of have loved or being in love. Aristophanes’ speech captures how powerful the feeling of love, that since birth love has condition our lives involuntary and will remain so. Love to Aristophanes’ is a form of completion that a lucky couple receives once the meet each other. This completion is empowered by an enormous amount of love, intimacy, and affection that neither bonds can be separated.
Many see love as a positive quality and for the most part it is. It gives us compassion for our fellow man, allows us to bond with each other, and care for our families. But it also has self-destructive properties too. In Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians feel a really strong patriotism to their city and empire.
Desire is a consuming force that causes the body to act without consulting the mind. Anne Carson’s translation of Sappho’s fragments in, If Not Winter, creates experiences in which, eros produces a gap between the subject and the desired object. With the use of vivid imagery and overt symbolism within fragment 105A, Sappho allows her readers to experience the uncontrollable forces of desire and attraction which govern a person who is in love; even if such feelings are irrational. This ultimately creates a tangible distance between the subject and the object she desires. In this paper, I will argue that longing after an unattainable person becomes so consuming that it eventually produces madness within the desiring individual.
Another trait eros lovers have is that they believe in love at first sight. Romeo experiences this with Juliet when he is waiting for his love Rosaline, but then he spots Juliet in the faces of many and says, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight!/ For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” (i .iiiii.
Love in this sense is obtained through familial love, because love discusses the sense of loyalty and family, and of respect. Love for Aeneas is supposed to be visual, “But now, when I had reached my father’s threshold, Anchises’ ancient house, our home-and I longed so to carry him to the high mountains and sought him first-he will not let his life be drawn after Troy has fallen,” (Virgil, Aeneid 2.857-860). Aeneas’ care for his father demonstrates similarities between romantic and familial love. Romantic love is obtained by being truthful and passionate. While
And all the readers in all these centuries have been interpreting a dramatic idea of love not based on reality but on impulsive feelings as “The ideal Love” . Romeo’s longing for ideal love is the primary driving force behind most of his actions, that reveal themselves as impulsive and stupid. In the tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, mutual love and devotion are the main characteristics of Shakespeare’s ideal love. He also portrays the idea of lovers making sacrifices in order to be together, even if it means forsaking things that are valuable to their existence, including their lives.
Despite popular opinion, love at first sight does not exist. The idea of “love” is widely misinterpreted as a mere attraction between two individuals. However, many do not understand that love goes much further than this, and what follows is a common misconception between love and lust. Shakespeare in his 17th century play Twelfth Night delves deeper into this idea of love. He presents the character Duke Orsino who appear to be infatuated and love-sick for the Countess Olivia, a woman with which he knows little about.
One example of how characters provide love for each other during hard times is when Zelda, a 911 operator, decides to adopt Jeremy and Owen: “We had nowhere to go to, no relatives, just a grandmother in a nursing home. Zelda stepped up and she’d take us in” (Potter 131). When Owen called the police to report what happened to his parents,
