Chapter 1 Introduction and objectives:
1.1 Lung diseases and their impacts on individuals and world population:
Lung diseases are defined by U.S. National Library of Medicine as any respiratory problem that obstructs the lungs from proper functioning. These diseases may be categorised in the following manner:
Airway diseases: these diseases either narrow or block the tubes that carry the air. These diseases are “asthma, emphysema, bronchiectasis, and chronic bronchitis” (U.S. National Library of Medicine, N.D.).
Lung tissue diseases: these diseases cause inflammation to the tissue and preventing it from becoming fully expanded when breathing.
Lung circulation diseases: these diseases influence the lung blood vessels. They obstruct the lung ability of keeping oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. They may also result in affecting heart functioning (U.S. National Library of Medicine, N.D.).
Smoking, pollution, dusts and chemicals are major factors leading to lung diseases (American Lung Association, 2015). Chronic lung diseases obstruct peoples’ daily life and prevent them from staying physically active and also have an economic impact on patients and their families (WHO, 2015). In addition, a number of studies have reported an association between lung diseases and psychological (Nicolson and

In this type of learning labelled data can be acquired through “a skilled human agent”. Semi-supervised learning is considered to be more beneficial in terms of learning accuracy compared to only supervised learning, if unlabelled data is available in addition to labelled data (Chapelle, 2006). Additionally, another type of categorisation based on the targeted output variable and the nature of the problem categorise ML into classification, regression and clustering (Statistical Learning & Data Mining,
Al Waysmoking was a 72 year-old retired factory worker who was a chain smoker. He is experiencing fatigue, shortness of breath, but continues to smoke. Upon exam his Nurse Practitioner notes that he has a prolonged expiratory phase, expiratory wheezes, and an increased anteroposterior chest diameter. His nail beds were cyanotic and he had moderate pitting edema. Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) revealed that Al had a decreased VC and an increased RV and FRC.
A case is presented at the hospital of a 2-month-old child, diagnosed with down syndrome, and currently recovering from a case of bronchiolitis. The child, Elisa, is also diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, and she will undergo surgery to correct this defect once she has had time to recover from her bronchiolitis. Elisa is the sixth child or Maria and Hector. She has three brothers and two sisters who range in age from 10 to 25 years old.
Hyaline membranes help to the development of fibrosis and atelectasis (collapse) essential to decrease in gas exchange capability and lung dysfunction. These changes cause the lungs to become stiff, patient work hard to inspire. Hypoxemia and the stimulation of juxtacapillary receptors in the stiff lung parenchyma leading to increase respiratory rate and decrease in tidal volume. Breathing irregular increase carbon dioxide removal,
They have been working hard against the particulates in the air, without any relief. This makes us more susceptible to pneumonia, and upper respiratory colds and infections”, Roselynn Bowman stated. In compliance with the weakening of lungs, residents of the area will continue to see more long-term effects the hazardous smoke has placed depending upon their age group. Children and teenagers are placed in a more at risk category because they are still in the process of growing so their respiratory systems are not yet fully developed. Until a respiratory system is fully developed, people breathe more air per pound of body weight than those who do have a fully developed respiratory system.
1.What are the common symptoms associated with an exacerbation of COPD? According to the Mayo Clinic (2017), symptoms occur when a vast amount of damage has occurred to the lungs and progressively worsens, especially if the patient continues to smoke. Change in sputum color, increased sputum amount, coughing more than usual, increased fatigue, breathlessness, increased difficulty completing ADLs, fever, confusion, increased sleepiness, and decreased pulse ox levels are symptoms that are typically associated with a COPD exacerbation (Lareau, Moseson & Slatore, 2014). 2.What assessment techniques will you use to assess Mary?
COPD can also be from the smoke of Mosquito coils. The smoke from the coils is commonly used to keep the mosquitos away. The smoke is also really bad for an individual’s health and breathing in the smoke is the equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes. The guidelines the program promotes, work to educate Indians when it comes
Lung disease caused by smoking include COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking cigarettes cause most lung cancer is the U.S. its harmful cause all the many ingredients in tobacco that can harm your body. The main health risk from smoking is lung cancer which is common cause so many people smoke. Smoking cause 90% of deaths from lung cancer alone, and around 80% of deaths from COPD, and 17% of deaths from heart disease. Smoking can cause alot of damage to the
From these questions that were given out by Dr. Frander, many students should have a great understanding what to expect to the mid-term exam. Dr. Frander really encouraged us to study because most of these questions are difficult. For instance, she gave us an example in a patient who has COPD/ emphysema. What we have concluded from this question what they are looking for the emphysema patients don’t have a problem of taking air in rather they have a problem of taking the air out. The main problem of the emphysema, they have a lot of mucus, and the alveoli which where the gas exchange takes is impaired.
While Jose and Jorge are identical twins, their lives could not have been any more different. They have different health determinants to their unfortunate diseases that differ from each other. The case study of Jorge and Jose emphasizes the idea that your zip code determines your health more than your genetic code. Just a quick reminder, Jose is the twin who grew up in a largely improvised family, while Jorge is the twin who grew up in an upper-middle-class family. Since both brothers have asthma it can be assumed that the brothers have asthma in their genetics, however, needed to be triggered.
Introduction Air in the lungs can be related to the terms lung volume and lung capacity. Lung volume is the amount of air used for either inhalation or exhalation (Wilmore, 1969). A person’s lung volume can be determined by a spirometer. A spirometer is an instrument that measures the ventilation of the lungs (22nd, 2013).
The heart may have the sinoatrial node (SA node) to trigger contraction, but in order for us to breath our nervous system has to signal for us to begin the process of ventilation (breathing). Our brain stem has three parts to it, but only the pons and medulla oblongata play a key role in breathing. The medulla helps set the respiratory rhythm by receiving and sending impulses to a bundle of neurons called the ventral respiratory group to the phrenic nerve to bring about contraction in the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles. All this only happens though due to the sensors of the chemoreceptors. The chemoreceptors located in the medulla and carotid and aortic bodies detect a rise in carbon dioxide (CO2).
Worldwide, tobacco use causes about 90% of lung cancer deaths, 30% of all cancers, 20-25% of coronary heart diseases and stroke deaths, and more than 80% of chronic bronchitis and emphysema”. (Jordan 1). Secondly not only does it affect smokers but even people who don 't even partake in the activity of smoking cigarettes. Second hand smoke is a serious issue and can cause cancer almost easy as being an actual smoker can.
Another is Bronchitis and is a cough disease that is caused by smoking, but not only smokers but children of smokers too. Heart disease is another effect; smokers
As per the latest study conducted by the World Health Organization, one billion people smoke worldwide, which constitute about 20% of the entire world population. Cigarette smoking has numerous health hazards however, lung cancer is the most known to generations. Smoking, at the same time, is also responsible for cardiovascular disease and heart stroke. But accelerated aging continues to remain the most ignored and standard side effect of smoking.
8) Diseases like asthma, and long-term behavioral and mental difficulties 9) Bronchitis 10) Female smokers have a high risk of miscarriage. EVILS OF SMOKING 1) Smoking causes mood stimulation. 2) Smoking causes erectile disfunction in men. 3) Smoking causes early menopause in women.
