In turn, 16 year old Amanda "rebelled" against her family and eventually married a black man. Tara is Amanda's daughter who now has to deal with societal pressures from being mixed. Lydia has her reputation to uphold through her daughter's rebellious actions, but in trying to maintain a good image she changes the way she treats her family and gives in to societal pressures that she faces. On the contrary, Amanda modifies her actions based on her belief of equality and completely rebels against what her society claims is the right thing to believe. Tara experiences the other side of society with her grandmother and gets her first taste of the bitter world that racism is a part of.
Hanna has what the narrator describes as the perfect life. Her parents are together, her house is friendly and her dad even visits their fifth-grade class. The two best friends were perfectly content with their life and no matter what they would not be separated nor turn against each other. “We were the girls with the wrong school supplies, and everything we did after that, even the things done just like everyone else, were the wrong things to do” (Horrock 473). Hanna and the narrator did not care whether they were doing the wrong thing socially, as long as they had each other.
In the story, Camilla is teased by her classmates and is even talked about on the news- both of which affect her mental and physical states (Fletcher, 2017). Jealousy in All Summer in a Day and Flowers for Algernon In the stories, All Summer in a Day by Rad Bradbury and Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes demonstrates how jealousy can bring out the worst of you. Therefore, jealousy can drive you to do bad things to those surrounding you. For instance, in All Summer in a Day the kids that lived in Venus for their whole entire life’s were jealous of Margot because she had experienced being outdoors when the sun has been up. Due to their jealousy, they did something awful to Margot the day that the sun was going to be up which is only up every seven years.
The theme of standing up to bullies is used throughout the entire book on many different characters, Chris Coughlin is one that has learned how to stand up to his bully. Throughout the book, Chris gets bullied by Mike about him wearing his dead brother’s letter jacket, but towards the end of the book, Chris and Mike decide to race for cutter letter jackets. With the encouragement from the other swimmers, Chris manages to beat Mike in the race. Now in modern day, standing up to bullies is a big social problem, one modern example of standing up to bullying was when Keaton Jones, an 11 year old school student was being bullied and he decided not to stay quiet about it. Keaton had recorded a video of himself talking about him being bullied and how it affects victims of bullying, his mother later posted the video online
The main focus throughout the duration of the book is bullying; tone, symbolization, and modern connections help provide the understanding that bullying is a never- ending issue. Nowadays bullying has become the major and common problem for children and can awfully affect their lives in many different ways such as depression and suicide. William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, takes place in the 1950’s in England, where Golding used to be a school teacher and face many types of problems among children. According to his novel, bullying is a particular problem for Piggy who cannot fit in a community because of his initial appearance. Even though Lord of the Flies has many purposes and it is not focused on just one target, Golding explains bullying and its impacts on Piggy very smoothly beside the main idea of the story. He shows how bullying causes Piggy to lose his self-confidence, breaking his glasses and became dependent and intimidated.

It shows the effects of what happened in the story and it gives the reader knowledge to understand the true meaning of this situation and why it happened. Theme Note #2: The theme: “We should not have our head up in the clouds, but instead face reality and learn how to make the best out of every situation” connects to this quote because it describes how when being in the clouds, it clouds our mind with visions that will most likely not come true. It shows that if we get our hopes up, that will only lead us to our demise.
Jessi walked home alone, like she always did. Nobody went to the school where she lived, so she never had anyone to walk with.
