Part A
1A. 2
1B. I will communicate often with my classmates and ask my professor for help whenever I am in need. During my field experience, I plan to converse with experienced teachers and ask for any advice that will help me succeed in this course, as well as in the future. Having people to rely on for guidance will help me grow as a student and as a preservice teacher.
2A. 6
2B. This semester I plan to go to as many MNEA meetings as possible. Being involved in an organization, pertaining to teaching, is a great way to remain up to date with the growth of education and new discoveries in the industry. I plan to not only attend the MNEA meetings regularly, but attend all of the events that take place outside of the meetings as well.

I believe that displaying energy and the will to work is a strength of mine because I enjoy working in a classroom environment. During my time teaching Junior Achievement, I will show up to my assigned class with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. I plan to administer each lesson to the best of my ability, in order to motivate my students.
Areas for Development
7A. I need to improve my efficiency at planning, organizing, and managing time.
7B. I find myself planning things at the last minute, which causes me to become unorganized and fall short of time. During my time teaching Junior Achievement, I will strive to plan my lessons in advanced and come to class rehearsed. Also, I will keep a separate binder specifically for my Junior Achievement course; this will help me remain organized and prepared for each lesson that I will be teaching.
8A. I need to improve my ability to use all available class time.
8A. As a preservice teacher, I have noticed that there have been instances when I have time to spare or not enough time at the end of my lesson. When teaching Junior Achievement, I plan to rehearse my lesson prior to presenting it, in order to make sure that I am taking advantage of all of the allotted class
2. I pulled out my focus learner and a few other students from the general classroom to teach a small group segment. On page 1 of the Instruction Commentary, the second prompt, you are to supply information that affect your instructional delivery in connection with the learning goal. Does this sound
Given 3 or less reminders and no more than 3 breaks during a class period, Joe will be able to remain on task (i.e., stay at his assigned seat, take notes, participate in group work, complete foldable etc.) for at least 20 consecutive minutes before taking a break in at least 2 of 3 opportunities in the classroom with at least 100% accuracy as measured by teacher observations. 5. Given an untimed reading session, reading material that is not of interest, close reading strategies (i.e., highlighting, questioning, and commenting in the margins), and a prompt/purpose for the reading, Joe will identify at least three key ideas that deem the reading important in at least 3 of 4 opportunities with 80% accuracy as measured by student work samples and teacher observations. 6. Given 3 reminders or less, Joe will arrive at least 3-5 minutes earlier to class in order to successfully transition back into working and be ready for the next period in at least 3 of 4 opportunities per day with 100% accuracy as measured by teacher observations.
ASAM 100 has been one of the most insightful classes I have taken in college—so far! Through this class, I was able to learn a great deal about my culture and about myself as a person. In retrospect to my first “Why ASAM?” essay, I still believe that it is important for everybody to learn about their culture sometime throughout their life. I was able to learn about various topics such as: the issues of my culture, the traditions of my culture, how others view individuals of my culture, and more. Throughout this class, I learned about the Model Minority Myth and its effect on individuals of Asian background, I learned about issues that other Asian Americans faced through the video, Asian American Voices, and I learned to grow as a writer.
The NA meeting had a guest speaker named Adam, the most surprising thing about meeting were candor and humor evoked by the speaker. Adam acknowledged that he has been addicted to drugs for seventeen years, and this behavior started when he was in the 7th grade. Adam was genuinely outspoken and humorously shared being in and out of treatment facilities over 28 times costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. The group really identified with the speakers story, and this was exhibited by laughter and comments from the crowd. Actually, I didn’t have any perceived notions about attend NA meeting, my only contention was to better understand this community.
2. How and when did you decide to enter teaching? Well I always played music as a kids, as you know, to help me cope in my everyday life. It was always such a huge part of who I was so it just seemed natural to want to share that. It was in high school that I really decided I wanted to teach.
This strength has developed through the amount of good influences I have had in my life. I use this skill every day at work and in my personal life. The last skill I will discuss is I have excellent communication skills. This strength has developed through years of giving presentations in school, and on the job training. Effective communication skills can help convey important messages and can help gain someone’s
I will understand that every student is different and embrace every challenge. My goal is to strive as a positive role model by influencing moral character with
I am Jimmy Nguyen, a graduate from the S.T.E.M(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program of L.V Berkner High School. Unlike the classmates in the class, I am the type of person that will work hard in order to achieve a goal that would eventually help me hit my milestone. My strengths are being able to work with classmates, fighting back procrastination, and hardworking. My weaknesses are time management, being organized, and prioritizing. It is required to have at least double the amount of time I am in class, so for this class I am required to have at least four hours of study time outside of class.
Nevertheless, it is the way that friction is approached that makes a difference. By applying my positive attitude and sense of finding a common ground among coworkers, it will enable me to apply this strength to my daily life. Lastly, the strength of achiever was a lesser theme for me compared to my other top strengths. I sometimes take on too many tasks and want to accomplish many things in order to make me feel good about myself. I am extremely committed to everything I do and influence others to succeed in what they do.
I learned in this activity how crucial time management skills will be to my ability to complete this course successfully. The analysis from the questionnaire (Table 2) as well as keeping a record of what activities I focus on for a couple of days, opened my eyes to a few areas of improvement. From the patterns observed I could see that most of my time was taken up by work and commitments as well as procrastination. Not being able to juggle theses successful led to irritation and was unproductive. Research suggests that managing ones emotions, being self-aware and self-motivate can be factors for success for a student (Allan, 2009).
My biggest area of strength is my ability to make student voice the center of classroom discussion. I require students to think deeply on authentic topics and I underscore best practice principles of collaboration and student-centered learning. For example,
They take the time to know their students and know them well. They appreciate what attributes to each child’s story and take ownership of their role in the child’s life for that school year. I feel that I have the skills and attributes of an outstanding teacher because of the pride I take in the love and support I show my students and families. I know teachers have the power to make a lasting difference and I start every year with that mindset.
Over the course of the last several months of my senior year, I have had the opportunity to work with the most vulnerable of the homeless population in Vancouver, Washington. Working with the harm reduction model, I have realized that the clients that are in the Housing First program are dealing with far greater issues than mental health and substance abuse. As a case manger, this only allows me to so much with the client and has shown me the importance of obtaining my MSW. By achieving this goal, I can help the client through psychotherapy and to affect change.
I am pursing a degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. I am passionate about education and excited to share the joy of learning with students. The perspective of wonder and sense of excitement that children bring into education motivates me daily. Teaching can leave a lasting impression in a child’s life and offers a special opportunity to shape the bright young minds of future generations. While many professions can be impactful, I believe the qualities of the person in the career position to be the most influential.
Time management: Time management is a very crucial component if you are willing to have a productive lifestyle. To be honest, I have always had issues with managing my time efficiently. This problem had become a huge obstacle once I got into college. Thus, attending a lecture that focuses on time management helped me a lot with this problem by introducing me to different aspects related to time management: planning, SMART goals, and important/urgent matrix. Learning to make a specific plan for my daily tasks and make a to-do list to make my day as productive as possible is something very helpful which was advised to me by the instructor of this lecture Mr. Irfan.
