However, as the reader, and the interpreter, I am asked to explain how Beowulf portrays the qualities of an archetypal epic hero. After reading of his battles, his character displays great acts of courage, intelligence, and strength, while warriors revel as Beowulf defeats the creatures. Epic Hero or Epic Zero Would one think of Odysseus as an epic hero? Although he had excessive pride and cheated on his wife, he has many traits that makes him an epic hero. For example, Odysseus was able to come up with a genius plan to injure Polyphemos before he could eat any more of Odysseus’ men, that demonstrates the trait of intelligence. Odysseus has been through many hardships and has always used his traits to help him get through any obstacle. Throughout Odysseus’ journey home, he demonstrates leadership, intelligence, and superhuman strength.
Macbeth is first described as a war hero who led the final blow on Macdonwald by a captain: “For brave Macbeth… with his brandished steel/ unseamed [Macdonwald] from the nave to th’ chops”(I, ii, 18, 20-24). With his ambition, he is able to gain the upper hand and lead his army into a successful battle that was incredibly close to losing. Ultimately, his eagerness to lead these people not only because he is a thane, but also because of his loyalty to King Duncan reveals how he is an astounding leader who is successful. In turn, the audience is able to see Macbeth as a hero, more specifically a leader who is honest and loyal.
Ambition is a powerful force and is a common motif. While ambition does positively benefit the wielder by giving them the necessary will and motivation to pursue after their goals and dreams, it can also harm those around the person. In doing so, the person themselves is also harmed. In Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, it is clearly shown how ambition’s negative impact on others plays into the harm it beings on the wielder.

Although the rise and fall of a tyrannical ruler who massacred to achieve his rank is disastrous enough, the true tragedy is the story of Lady Macbeth. A strong woman forced into a pit of self-loathing by a misogynistic society, who then is mercilessly blamed for the actions of her husband, who hid his cruelty behind cowardice. A woman who was so desperate for relief from her own inner agony, that she was blinded to Macbeth’s clever rouse. A rouse no one else ever saw through, yet Lady Macbeth bears the brunt of the blame.
