Have you ever seen something or heard something that caused madness in the town? Well author Arthur Miller sets this up very well in his play “The Crucible”. The main characters are John Proctor, Reverend Parris, Abigail Williams, and Reverend Hale. In the small town of Salem Massachusetts, a group of girls went dancing in the woods, when the Reverend Parris showed up one of the girls,his daughter, fell sick and could not wake. The doctor couldn’t find anything wrong with the girl named Betty. He told Reverend Parris to look into witchcraft. Parris was suspicious of Abigail and Abigail started naming people off saying they were witches. In this town madness and exaggerated uncontrolled fear had begun. Mary starts to get scared and lets her fears get out of hand a little bit. She starts screaming and crying saying she can’t go against Abigail that Abigail will kill her. On page 1181 Mary screams in terror saying “ i cannot I cannot they’ll turn on me”. Mary believes that if she tries to tell the court the truth about Abigail that Abigail and the other girls will all turn on her and tell the court that Mary is a Witch also. Everybody overreacts to the smallest thing. The girls start to blame everybody on Witchcraft. The townspeople get scared of everyone and everything. Every little thing can make you a witch. The girls cause uncontrolled fear among the people. John Proctor has uncontrolled fear for his wife so he forces Mary to go to court and tell the truth. Mary has uncontrolled fear of Abigail. And Abigail overexaggerates in court to get Mary in trouble with the court. Proctor has fear for his wife to hang for he know that she is not a witch. Mary has uncontrolled fear for she is terrified that Abigail will turn the court on her which is what she tried to do. Hysteria was outraged in this small town for no reason. Many people hanged because of Abigail and the other girls. People were scared they would be the next on the list. Or that one of their friends or family members would be.
