The first edition of IFFI was organized by the Films Division, Government of India, under the patronage of the first Prime Minister of India. Held in Mumbai from January 24 to February 1, 1952, the Festival was subsequently taken to Chennai, Delhi and Calcutta. In everything we had about 40 features and 100 shorts. In Delhi, the IFFI was inaugurated by Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on 21 February 1952. Since its inception in 1952, the IFFI was the largest event of its kind in India. The organizer of the fifth edition of IFFI was entrusted to the Directorate of Film Festival. IFFI became a member of the FIAPF in the fifth edition and was classified as an "A" grade festival. The festival was inaugurated on December 30, 1974. For the first time a symbol of special design, a stylized peacock and a logo were adopted at the festival.
