Mahakali Treaty
(Water sharing and its impact on the relationship between India and Nepal)
Introduction:-
This paper is about Mahakali treaty, which focuses on sharing of river water by two nations (India and Nepal) for the integrated development of river basin. This paper also discusses the formal treaties like Sarada Treaty and Tanakpur Agreement which has a great influence on the making of Mahakali Treaty. The paper captures potential causes, interests, areas of water conflicts and sources of water conflicts. It attempts to provide some recommendations in avoiding future water conflicts.

Under this agreement unlike Sarda treaty, Nepal government provided 2.9 hectors of land to Indian government for the construction of a head regulator (main part of the reservoir regulating the water flow) with a capacity of 1,000 cusecs, and it also needed India to build a cannel so that 150 cusecs of water could be provided to Nepal. India also agreed upon installing a hydro-project and providing Nepal 10 megawatts of electricity. They also agreed upon giving Nepal extra water during monsoon period.
This agreement which provides giving of electricity and water by India to Nepal was seen as the quid pro quo to Nepal for giving India 2.9 acres of its land.
This agreement leads to fall of Nepal government in upcoming elections. Because before the agreement was made India started planning of making left flux and flood protection work was started in November 1991.
