CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 MALAYSIAN FILMS The Malaysian film industry is made up of players who are divided into three major groups. The first are the studios that fund themselves. The second are the independent producers who procure loans to make films, usually from a government fund. The third are the motley group of young filmmakers (dubbed The Little Cinema of Malaysia or simply, ‘the indies’), with very little budgets and who shoot on digital cameras using a minimum crew mostly made up of their friends (Muthalib, 2012). The influx of foreign film products is the main challenge faced by the local industry as a result of globalization. In Malaysia, the industry does not really have any rules or act in protecting of limiting the amount of foreign products being import. Hence, foreign countries are free to enter with minimal requirement into our market to broadcast their films in local cinema. It has to pass through the Malaysian Film Censorship Board, which is the government authority that is responsible for granting licenses to the film for public viewing, and to provide subtitles in the Malay language (Herwina and Delaila, 2012). Rao (n.d.) mentioned that, having more than 100 movies banned over the past decade solely on the pretense of upholding morality for the sake of its community of viewers, Malaysia could be reputed for being one of the states with the strictest media censorship, Nevertheless, it has been extremely difficult to contain and fully practice film and media censorship properly with the advancement of technology. It requires faster internet speeds, greater digital storage capabilities and access to a wider range of devices for playback than pirating music, which has now become relatively simple, fast and cheap.
