Malcolm Outliers: The Story Of Success

The idea of what determines success varies within a person. One might say that wealth and power correlate with success. In reality, a complex array of factors determines the success of a person. In Gladwell’s novel, The Outliers, he critiques many examples of successful and unsuccessful stories. In the stories, he explains the main factors of success, or the “recipe”. For Gladwell, he describes the “recipe” of success to include luck, practice, and opportunity.

Malcom Gladwell is author of Outliers The story of success. Gladwell speaks on success how circumstances may out come your success but that may not be that case. Tony Robbins a motivational speaker, author, and philanthropist. Robbins doesn’t see circumstances as a determined factor. He is a prime example of that.

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell teaches you the understanding of success. Malcolm Gladwell in the book Outliers uses logos, pathos, and ethos to get his argument across. Outliers was written for the purpose to show the audience that success isn’t all on how hard you work, raw talent, intelligence or personality traits. Success comes from your culture, who your parents are, when you were born and the opportunities you have been given. The argument by logic, emotion and character are all put into Outliers to convince the readers that success is what you make of it.

Gladwell states, “Successful people don’t do it alone.” (119). No matter what people do there is not a time when they aren’t surrounded by factors that will affect them. Factors like society, wealth, or family can change your path to your future. Wes Moore became a successful man who achieved his dreams of becoming a Rhodes Scholar, honored veteran, and great leader. His opportunities were earned through motivation and everything around him was a part of his success. He was never alone and his journey through life taught him to not only be a leader for himself but to others, too. Wes Moore is an outlier, but that doesn’t mean success can’t be achieved by a person who isn’t one.

In the contemporary world, a person’s success is usually determined by their job and because of this social norm, most of one’s life is spent attempting to live up to this expectation. Individuals possess vast dreams to hold highly ranked jobs and be content while doing so. However, the harsh reality is that people do not always necessarily meet society’s definition of “success.” There are several factors as to why, under certain circumstances, one cannot hold an affluent occupation and be prolific. In accordance to the poems regarding this notion, labor is portrayed in a negative manner where success cannot be won. In this quote, Anne wanted everyone to know that everyone has their own definitions of success and have their own ways to get their. Two ways that people define success is being happy or satisfied with what they love doing and reaching their goals after obstacles. These two features can be seen in the books, The Outliers, The Last Lecture, Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul and the article, Catching Kayla, by Digital Sports News.

In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell challenges those who assume hard work is the only path to success. “It is not the brightest who succeed. Nor is success simply the sum of decisions and efforts we make on our behalf.” Gladwell states that success can happen through a series of different factors.

Success is a concept that is constantly altered and has a different meaning from person to person. The stereotypical definition of success would be someone who has a high-paying job or is in the upper-class. Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Outliers: The Story of Success, approaches the concept of success in a different and unique way. Gladwell discusses how opportunities, cultural legacy, and hard work all coincide with each other to produce real success. He uses mostly logic and multiple unrelated anecdotes to support and provide evidence for his statements. Gladwell 's main argument is that although hard work and talent are essential for success, one’s given opportunities and cultural legacy are what really drive them to the pinnacle of success.

The book Outliers, written by Malcolm Gladwell, never defines the word "success," a concept explored in its entirety throughout the book. Rather, the term Outlier is defined as “something that is situated away from or classed differently from a main or related body,” and “a statistical observation that is markedly different in value from the others of the sample,” which relates to the popular view of success. Conversely, Gladwell’s theory of success is that the outliers could not have achieved success without both the opportunity to achieve success, and the hard work to make use of the opportunity. Following this principle, I have related my own successes to this theory.

Malcom Gladwell, the author of The Outliers, analyzes the factors to success based on real-life example. Through statistical facts and logical reasoning, he attempts to prove how success is more than just hard work and being intelligent. He supports his arguments with accurately calculated statistical facts to gain the trust of his audience and to work towards 2proving his points. Gladwell determines the reasons of success by comparing well-known successful people and finding commonalities between those people.

In The Twelfth Night, Shakespeare writes, “Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” To some extent, this is true. As discussed in Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, however, the origins of success are not at all random; there are specific factors, including how one is raised, where they come from, and one in a million chances that contribute to one's prosperity. An outlier is a piece of data that surpasses the value of its surrounding points. In terms of successful individuals, an outlier is someone who outshines their peers in their field, whether it be music, law, or soccer. It is clear that an outlier is not just born; they come out of opportunities, privileged backgrounds,

Many people claim a hero is someone “special” no one normal can be a hero. A hero 's journey comes in steps which are the Normal World, Call to Adventure, Refusal of the call, Mentor, Start the journey,Tests, Allies, Supreme ordeal, and lastly the Resolution. I 'm going to take you through the steps of Malcolm X’s hero 's journey. Malcolm X as we all know was a inspirational activist, but his hero’s journey was extremely unique. Let us take a look at Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) who was recognized worldwide as a mythologist, also working with comparative religion too. One of his many books, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, which has sold over a million copies and translated into twenty languages. Campbells concept, also called the monomyth, details on how all stories, fiction or nonfiction, follow a certain pattern.

In "Outliers: The story of success", Malcom Gladwell explained and gave examples of ways to be successful. There are many ways that Gladwell mentioned, such as luck, practice, background, family, and culture. There are many more of course, but I will save time. There are three of which I think are the most important, these being Intelligence, Social Skills, and Location; and these are explanations as to why I think these are the most important.

Success can come from many different variables, opportunities, and advantages. In Malcolm Gladwell’s novel, Outliers, Gladwell had popularized the theory that ten thousand hours of practice will eventually lead to success. Being the only factor, 10,000 hours of practice will not lead to success. In order to be elite and successful, you need other significant contributors in the equation.

Everybody always has dreams in their own life, some dreams are achievable and some are not. People without self-confidence are always scared of chasing dreams because failure is like nightmare in their minds. Nevertheless, those people will never know what did they give up, their crystalline dreams. On the other hand, people with enthusiasm always chase their dream without reasons because they will feel regret if they didn’t try; they may be successful however when they try to challenge themselves. Thus, it is important for people to chase their dreams, challenge themselves and achieve their goals.
