Argumentative Essay Male and female athletes are not paid the same amount even though they are doing the same work. I believe that it is not right. At the end of the day, professional athletes' sports are the athletes job and the field, court and track are their offices. In 2022, professional female athletes earned an average of 78% less of what professional male athletes earned, while playing the exact same sport. I personally can not see any reason why a male and female athlete should not be paid the same amount. Both work equally as hard for the same amount of time. Women in the WNBA should get paid just as much as men in the NBA. In the WNBA (Women National Basketball Association), the

The article Why do so many WNBA stars play basketball overseas by Jeffery May was written to inform readers that women basketball players do not get paid the same in the United States as they do overseas. May states “…particularly playing in leagues in Turkey, China, and Russia. There, they can earn as much as 15 times their US salary.” (May, 2022). This is a result of the unequal treatment and compensation of the females in the United States. While the WNBA is a professional sport organization, they under pay all their athletes compared to how they pay the males in the NBA personal sport organization. As a result of this unfairness, women result in playing overseas where they can earn more money and still excel in their sport. Because women are talented enough to play professional sports in the United States they should not have to go overseas to be able to make a decent living. The WNBA should recognize this and take action. By doing this they will not only have a growth in numbers in the WNBA but also have a more successful program.
The WNBA is supported by the NBA but yet their pay does not reflect that. The NBA should come together with the WNBA to voice their opinions on the uneven pay. The NBA allows male athletes to have bigger platforms and use that to voice the unfairness in the sport industry, they can bring more light to the matter. Furthermore, the

(Gerencer). Women in the WNBA work everyday to prove that they can be just as skilled as NBA players are, and that they deserve to paid a decent amount. Yet, they do not get the credit for their skills because they are considered to be boring to most people. These women deserve a paycheck that matches their abilities and efforts, not opinions on them. Thus, women who play professional basketball should have an increase in the amount they are paid because they do not get enough money despite their abilities, and the fact that they are playing at a professional
Title IX reads. “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance” (U.S. Department of Education). As understood in the world of college sports, Title IX requires equal participation opportunity for male and female athletes in proportion to overall campus population and interest. Schools do not have to spend the exact same amount of money on men’s and women’s sports (Hruby). They already sign coaches to drastically different contracts, so there is no reason that Title IX should withhold athletes from receiving just compensation.
Since the NBA is more known than the WNBA they get more fans, sponsors, and exposure. It is tough for the WNBA to get out there, sure some people know it exists but most do not pay attention to it. Lisa Leslie, a WNBA star, stated “It would be nice getting more fans to support the WNBA and more women supporting women in sports” (Martin). “The Princeton women 's basketball team did something no other Ivy League men 's team had done before, racking up 30 wins and zero losses. The Princeton team garnered national headlines, which was great, but I still wondered what it was going to take for women 's sports to get the same attention as men 's sports” said Kelly Wallace the author of this article.
Clearly, this is why the WNBA should get paid as much as men do. A second reason why the WNBA should get paid more is that women’s sports don’t get as nearly as
Title IX was meant to order change in American education by illiminating discrimination on gender, but instead it still has problems and could use some improvement. One of the main splits between men and women athletics is the pay gaps between the two sexes. The salary difference between the United States Mens and Womens National Teams proves this. For example, “Each player on the USWNT earns $99,000 per year provided the team wins 20 “friendlies” (exhibition matches), the minimum number of matches they would play. By contrast, each men’s player would earn $263,320 for the same feat and would still earn $100,000 if the team lost all 20 games,” (Walters 3).
Also, in the WNBA the ball is 28 inches round compared to the NBA ball which is 29 inches round. Both of these show examples of the differences between the women 's league and the men 's league. If a woman was to join the NBA they could struggle due to the differences. If women were to play in the NBA men would be playing against other competitors who are possibly slower and more fragile than themselves.
Other people also fear that there might be some lawsuits since it’s impossible to have an across the board pay scale. Some people think that females might file a lawsuit considering they won’t be payed the same as male athletes. These prove that paying athletes would cause a lot of problems that would hinder athletes from taking their studies
Not all athletes are superstars ”the researchers argue, schools should compensate student-athletes according to the value they provide the university” (Entman). The star athlete at college universities should be paid slightly more than the average players. For the players that are not star athletes yet they won’t receive too much less than the star athletes, but the higher talented athletes deserve to be noticed a little more than the
Just think your a college basketball player working hard and the top of your team it all good on the court but outside of basketball you are struggling to get money. A starting freshmen in college was tacked so hard in football the he was parlized. A college basketball player has most his or her time practicing for basketball. Most college basketball players have to skip classes for basketball. College basketball player should be paid because they put their bodies at risk, they don’t have money, and they skip classes for basketball.
There are many little boys and girls who want to grow up and be professional athletes. They have hopes and dreams and put in the hard work and effort to achieve them. What they do not know is how different their lives are if they make it in this profession. While the men are able to live pretty comfortably, the women usually struggle to make a living, and they most often live with other teammates or family to help split the bills. They are often “forced” to play all year round, even overseas.
Ever since its debut by gym teacher Dr. James Naismith in 1891 basketball has become a widely popularized team sport for both men and women across the nation. Though enjoyed by both men and women, women have struggled to attain the same respect in the sport as men, even though the women at the University of California had their first extramural game in 1892. The same trend continues in the NBA, National Basketball Association, and WNBA, Women’s National Basketball. The NBA started 70 years ago in 1946 while the WNBA began 20 years ago in 1996. The NBA continues to gain popularity, while the WNBA struggles to still be known.
The most clear evidence of the inequality between women and men hockey players refers back to the resources provided to a ‘quality’ career and training, which is clearly portrayed by money. In the Women’s Hockey League, a mere budget of 1.8 million dollars is set. When compared to a man’s salary in the Hockey League, it is equivalent to a year salary for that player. This concludes that the budget that runs a female league is less to a man’s annual salary, and for the men it can got up to a couple of million dollars every year. Arguably, women have as much success as men, especially during the Olympics.
Women in sports can compete the same, and sometimes even stronger, as men so their pay should just be as much as them, and the gender pay gap shouldn’t be present. If both sexes play the exact same sport, why do they have different fiscal values? Many female athletes are equally talented compared to men so they should at least get paid the same. “The U.S. women’s team will get a $2 million bonus for winning the FIFA Women 's World Cup. A lot of money to you and me, yes.
In 2007, Wimbledon after many years of protest resulted in equal pay among both female and male athletes. Before then, the U.S. Open was the only tournament that gave equal prize money to both genders. “Records show that equal pay has not hurt Wimbledon, as prize money has nearly doubled in the last five years for men and women.” Some people were sexist to women thinking that their only job was to take care of the family. I believe when it comes to salary women in the WNBA have less money is because some people aren't interested so their money isn’t going high even if they're good at
If society stops to understand the struggles these women have been facing for decades will have a clearer picture of what steps to take in order to make a change in the sports industry. Men need to put their masculinity aside and advocate giving women a voice. The purpose of this paper is to explore the issues women in the sport world have faced through history, wage gaps, current issues today, and to discuss findings and recommendations for future research. Title IX is a law that came into effect in 1972, this comprehensive federal law prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity.
