INTRODUCTION
I chose to do my community service at Mama Fatuma Goodwill Children`s Home because of one main reasons. I had visited the home previously several times and I had an understanding of how the institution works and more importantly the vital role it plays in shaping the lives of the precious children whom it houses.
BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Mama Fatuma Children`s Home was established in 1966 for the disabled and physically impaired children of Nairobi`s suburb of Eastleigh. Shortly after the launch of the initiative, Mama Fatuma Gullam converted the home into a place of refuge for children who were orphans, those whose parents had abandoned them or had passed away due to HIV/AIDS. To meet the needs of the increasing number of

Firstly is the lack of sufficient finances, the Home has struggled financial since it heavily relies on foreign assistance. Sponsors and well-wishers are few and although the Home gets assistance from the Government it isn’t enough to meet the costs of the Home. The limited funds hinder the Home and it struggles to meet some the needs of the children such as education. The well-wishers and sponsors at times also forget and have to be called up and reminded about their promises which is a very frustrating process. There is also a lack of sufficient number of well-wishers, sponsors and donors, this then leads to adding more strain on the already insufficient funds the Home has access …show more content…
Being an International Relations student I got the chance to experience some of the concepts I learnt in my various IR classes to good use by getting a hands-on experience which was very important for not only its relevance but its uniqueness. I learnt that it’s everybody’s responsibility to take part in the well-being of the community and that the community is essentially you and me, the community is a shared asset that we all own and have a stake in and thus it’s our responsibility to take care of the less fortunate in the
6. If you were one of the other members of the Smythe County ECI program, how would you counsel Carol on proceeding with the Williams family? I can see that Carol is very passionate about the Williams family, and I would use her passion to remind her to use that to do what is best for Bobby. Although, I would also remind her not to let her emotions for the Williams family cloud her judgement with it comes to both Joy and Bobby. I also would encourage Carol to connect Joy with any many outside community resources that could help the both Joy and Bobby’s with their needs.
They have no way to get their feet on the ground and get a leg up on their lives. Transferring from one slum to the next can be extremely taxing especially for the younger children as well. Always having to move to a new neighborhood or school area starts the kids at a disadvantage already. Even when they found a place to live for a while they were well below living conditions, ““People who were repulsed by their home, who felt they had no control over it, and yet had to give most of their income to it—they thought less of themselves(Desmond 257). Any repairs or improvements of any sort were left responsible to the landlords.
The value of service-learning is based on two main dimensions, which are normative and pedagogical effectiveness. The focus of this study is on the pedagogical effectiveness dimension and how service-learning provides unique experiences and situations where the students must adapt, which is the “essence of the impact or active ingredient” for learning in this format (8). Service-learning encourages students to obtain more responsibility and are given more opportunities to view education as an “evolving process” instead of an “end product” (8). Through reflection, students develop and challenge their skills of critical thinking and connects them to a common goal with the community that promotes their “affective, civic, social, and cognitive development” (8). Proponents say there are many advantages for this type of learning including: allowing students to become participants instead of passive “sponges,” and expanding the limits of the classroom to the outside world allowing students to participate in the community.
The organization known as Children Requiring a Caring Kommunity
This world is filled with issues and millions of people are the victims of these issues. We not only have responsibility to our family and our community, but we also have a duty to help and care for each other in the world despite the racial and status differences. In the community setting, it is important to take part of organizations that establish rules beneficial to the public. We have a commitment on this earth, as global citizens to be beneficial and decrease the poverty, the shootings, and the plagues to make this world a better place for the present and the

By incorporating social justice and cultural studies in schools, students can understand the way of life of others and positively affect the world to become a better place. Dedicating a class to teaching young minds about how other
Through serving others, I have come to realize that every person, regardless of one’s cultural background, has something to offer to the community. As an immigrant, I was quite hesitant about accepting new challenges. The fear of others’ judgment regarding my performance hindered my progress. However, through serving others in various capacities, I was able to interact and help people in my community, who themselves helped me overcome my fears. Whether helping patients at St. John Providence or assisting refugees at the American Red Cross, I was amazed as to how much my presence made a difference, especially for those who needed me to interpret for them.
Promoting international awareness and knowledge is what I have being doing all my life; after all I have practically being raised on the move. Being a Third Culture Kid (TCK) has allowed me to adapt to any scenario, regardless of the differences the places I lived posses, while simultaneously maintaining my identity. That is not to say that I as a person have not changed, if anything I take with me a little pearl, a lesson, a way of thinking from each place. This has allowed me to grow as a human being by breaking down walls of self-doubt, fear and insecurity. Emerging oneself into a new culture is not easy, if anything it is challenging, but worth it for the experiences and friendships gained along the way.
Assignment #2 - What does service mean to me? This is a concept that I have been considering in great detail. I have always loved doing community service and giving back to the community. However, I never thought of what my life would be like without community service. The definition of service based on the Oxford dictionary: "The action of helping or doing work for someone.
What is life’s most extraordinary pleasure? For many, money, power, and/or fame come to mind, and the idea of helping others does not register. It seems for every person eager to help, there are millions ready to hurt or disregard those in need. Nevertheless, the world is not beyond salvation; there are numerous individuals willing to give their time and labor to transform the world into a better place for all. These devoted people are volunteers, and they believe life’s most extraordinary pleasure is the joy of helping others.

There are many issues regarding the welfare of children from all over the world. Children have been repeatedly impacted by wars and conflicts in their countries. Moreover, many children from some areas do not have access to their rights such as education and health and have to suffer from discrimination, violence, abuse and sexual and economic exploitation. After the World War II, Children from all over Europe had to suffer the aftermath of the war. This is when the United Nations stepped in and created United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, or as today’s shorter term, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in December 1946 with the sole purpose to lessen the suffering by providing foods, clothing and health care.
The Ted-Talk, “What It Means to be a Citizen of the World” given by Hugh Evans was seemingly directed towards those individuals who “self identify first” as a “member of a state, nation, or tribe” and therefore are focused solely on the improvement of their closed-community rather than the improvement of the entire “human race”. Therefore, centering his audience at those individuals who remain outside the lines of being a global citizen. The main idea that Hugh draws up throughout his speech is the impact that the actions of a single individual; no matter how small, can have when one acts with the purpose of combating “extreme poverty, climate change, and inequality” on a global scale rather than a local one. In order to do so, Hugh introduces the stories of a few individuals who have been able to impact people that are “not [themselves], not in [their] neighborhood, [their] state, or even in [their] country” and along the way reveals his own journey to becoming a global citizen.
Community service does not only have a profound impact on our community, but the impact it has on the individual people is even greater. The concept of community service has always been something that I grew up with, and now that I am older I better understand how important community service is for society. I have participated in community service activities. Starting in elementary school, I helped feed the homeless and rescue animals. Even with my wide range of volunteer experience, it was difficult to find an activity that would be meaningful and fulfill my thirty-hour obligation for my senior project.
