5. How can the application of Management information systems enhance an organisations strategy?
Without reiterating much of the abundant and intricate, definitions in relations to the strategy and information systems as well as competition within an industry, a brief summation of applying management systems for the enhancement of strategy is offered.
The effectiveness of managers is highly depended upon management information systems. Management information systems supply managers with a variety of inputs, allowing managers to co-ordinate, plan, monitor, evaluate, measure operations and performance. Management information systems, afford managers the proficiencies to make changes needed to fit an organization’s information system, however within making changes it is best to realise that, these changes have an impact on the functionality of other systems not designed to for a particular process and as a result can affect even the culture of the organization. Innovation and flexibility across an organisation can allow for employees to modify systems as they improve business processes (Knott & Medina, 2012:35).
The success of a strategic information system planning is a factor of great observation, when it comes to measuring the success of an organisation. Altameem et al (2014) states that information systems have a very high role in the strategy on an organisation. They assist organisations in conducting day to day activities, allowing the business to function properly, while supporting decision making. Organisations regard information systems as a strategic resource because they provide various opportunities across an organisation.
5.1 Management Information Systems and Corporate
Strategy means the approach, plan and knowledge that is used to move in the direction that will allow the company to satisfy the customer’s wants and needs, and obtain their goal, while reaching and maintaining an economical benefit over the competition (Defining Your Business Strategy, 2016). It can further be defined as a means of evaluating at what success level they are currently sustaining, and what success level they desire to obtain and the means they will need to use to get to their desired level (Bryson p. 11). Next, section 2 describes the development of academic debate on Strategic Information Systems Planning (SISP) where the concept of IS strategy is widened. Then, section 3 provides a detailed context in IS strategy research. This section is based on a literature review which consists of the IS strategy research at a duration between 1970 and 2005.
