This book entitled “Managing Stress” shows us how to
• Identify stressful situations at work and home, as well as our reactions to them.
• Manage our reactions to stress by giving ourselves “first aid”, by making necessary changes, and by anticipating & planning for stress in advance.
• Combat stress by developing anti-stress eating, sleeping, and exercise habits

It is a surprising revelation that we ourselves are directly responsible for our own levels of stress at work and at home. This knowledge gives us an advantage as awareness of stress helps us deal with it in a better way.
This book is divided into nine chapters. Chapter 1 “What is Stress?” looks at what stress is and includes definitions, highlights the difference between pressure and stress and explain the biology of stress. Stress occurs when pressure exceeds your perceived ability to cope. Stress is real and is not good for us. We work at our optimum when we are under the right amount of pressure. An internal Locus of Control is desirable and good for our psychological health.
Chapter 2 “A working model of stress, coping and resilience” provides a working model of stress that underpins the approach of the book, and looks at the importance of life events and the concept of helpful and unhelpful negative emotions. The working model of stress highlights why some people become stressed where as others can cope, perform well, are resilient and in good health. The stress response occurs in a number of stages. This help to take out trauma from a crisis. This chapter also considers improving confidence, self-esteem and self-acceptance, which are aspects of stress. Psychologists have identified 15 thinking errors that frequently contribute to stress and hinder successful problem solving. We need to identify those thinking errors and try to modify them.
Chapter 4 “Changing your Imagery” focuses on the images or pictures which create high levels of stress and reduce performance. We can focus on them and modify these pictures or visualisations. Sports psychologists and coaches do exactly the same for top athletes and it is scientifically proven that it works. Coping imagery is a powerful technique to deal with future events and reduce stress. Motivation imagery can help to motivate. The participants in the experimental group had 12 individual sessions of imagery for 45 minutes were the focus was on visualizing the exercises that they had previously engaged in earlier during physical therapy (Christakou et al, 2007). For the first four sessions imagery was explained to the members of the experimental group. In order to test the effectiveness of imagery the participants in the experimental group completed the Vividness of Movement Imagery Questionnaire. The VMIQ scale ranges from 1-5. A score of 1 means the image seen was vivid and a score of 5 meant that the person cannot see the image (Christakou et al, 2007).
Patti Dobrowolski states that the benefits individuals received from drawing out their plan for the future will better them remember because individuals remember things better when they attach it to a picture. Dobrowolski shared that individuals have a increase of 65% better memory when they attach it to a picture. Secondly, Dobrowolski said that individuals get the most power when they paint their own picture. In this video, Dobrowolski stress the importance of, in order to achieve it, you must first see it, believe it, then ask and train your brain to act on it. When individuals draw their pictures and see their current life, they should feel pain because it hurts.
The 2008 National Geographic documentary, Stress, Portrait of a Killer, explains stress in many different perspectives. Depression can be attributable to multiple factors and there might not be a single identifiable cause for the condition. Stress involves interaction of the person and environment. To quote a definition: “Stress is an adaptive response to an external situation that results in physical, psychological and / or behavioural deviations for organizational participants” (Luthans, 1998). Stress has generally been viewed as a set of neurological and physiological reactions that serves an adaptive function (Franken, 1994). Traditionally, stress research has been oriented toward studies involving the body's reaction to stress and the cognitive processes that influence the perception of stress. However, social perspectives of the stress response have noted that different people experiencing similar life conditions are not necessarily affected in the same manner (Pearlin, 1982).
You should cast off stress in order to concentrate on work, study and enjoy the life. There are various ways to cope with stress such as you should reduce stress by listen to music, maintain positive thinking and have a healthy lifestyle. One of the way to reduce stress is by maintaining positive thinking in daily life. Positive thinking is you are thinking the best is going to happen instead of the worst and deal with unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way.
