Manifest Destiny Imperialism

Cultural diversity flourishes in the United States even though the golden door are no longer as open as they once were. Americans’ doors have rusted shut through disuse. It doesn’t matter how many people come to the United States looking for freedom and opportunity there will always be groups of people who voluntarily discredit immigrants. Despite Emma Lazarus’s optimistic view, immigrants have and will almost always be looked upon with a predisposition of judgement and shame. With this they will most likely have a harder time reaching the freedom they aspired for.

The social reaction to expansionism continued throughout both movements because the opposing sides of each argument disagreed on completely different topics. Many during the time of Imperialism believed America was destined to expand due to the believed superiority of the Anglo-Saxon race (Doc 1), and was justified in expanding due to the fact that America would spread democracy and that they were required to expand because it was the “White Man’s Burden” (Doc 1-POV). This is also true for Manifest Destiny, which was built on the idea that God ordained the western hemisphere for Americans. Manifest Destiny was a phrase that was made up by journalist John L. O’sullivan back in 1844. The United States wanted to push westward to the frontier such as Texas, California, and Oregon. The reason behind Manifest Destiny was to expand to provide new places to live and jobs. Manifest Destiny is the belief that the Americans could extend themselves from coast to coast. The way Americans conquered the new land were removing the Native Americans from their land.

Based on the following three sources, did the concept of Manifest Destiny motivate Americans to try to develop a relationship with land and to control something that cannot truly be possessed?

Famous French historian Alexis de Tocqueville once said, “America is great because she is good. If America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.” (qtd. in Carson 651.) In “Recovering America’s Exceptionalism,” Ben Carson explains how we are losing touch with the values that once made America a great country. These include decency, honesty, compassion, and fairness. He explains that in order to avoid devastation we must remember these values when making decisions about our future. I would agree that all hope is not lost, but we will have to embrace the values that America was originally founded upon to achieve greatness once again.

There are five foundations of America’s political system. These foundations are Popular Sovereignty, Separation of Powers, Checks and Balances, Federation, and Individual Rights. The first of the foundations is Popular Sovereignty, where,“the people possess the superior power over their political community, and can alter their government or amend the constitution.” (Ahmed Ehab,”Foundations of the American Political System”). The second foundation is the Separation of Powers, where the government is split into separate, equally-powerful branches. An example of this is the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the American government. History is really amazing, but it can be horrifying to, the incident that occurred between the years 1877 and 1945 shows how horrifying and judgmental we can be towards each other. America is a place where people like immigrants seek for a better lifestyle away from their home countries, but when they get here it is far from better. In some incidents, you can say justice had been served, but with some justice were treated unfairly by others. People losing their life’s because of the judging of other people. America is a nation where great things happen consistently, but with the good comes the bad. People are judged and criticized everyday for who they are or who they like. This should be changed. In this free country no one should be stripped of what they are because it's different than a majority. If the citizens of America come together and realize being different is not a bad thing, we can begin to heal as a whole nation. Together we can change for the better.

Upon reading the selections The Myth of the Melting Pot, Gentrification, and How Immigrants Became Other, one notices a shocking trend: The “land of the free,” isn't really what it claims to be. From ideas of white supremacy, to heterogenous cultural mixtures that result in only one uniform product, to the rejection of outsiders, America is not the melting pot that it has pretended to be for centuries. Ever since the founding of the colonies, so-called Americans have never been truly and intimately intertwined. As one peels away the facade, it becomes evident that citizens in this great land favor sweeping differences under the rug rather than facing them, keeping shame in the dark, and inferiority and superiority mounted on the wall. Herman Melville descibe the United States as a “snivelization”. The word “snivel” means to speak or act in a whinning, sniffling, tearful, and weakly manner. What he means by “snivelization” is that we as citizens complain too much and whine too much. I agree with this statement, saying that we Americans are a Snivelization.

Times have changed, and so have the virtues and ideals that build up what we know as an American. America has portrayed an image of a “perfect nation” along with a diverse and equal society, however this is far from the truth. If you think that the United States is the most advanced country in the world, you have missed the bullseye and hit the edge of the dartboard. The concept of equality simply does not exist in today’s society. With one look, people already believe they know everything about you. In simple words, an American today is just simply a hypocrite, and are blinded by the belief that they are living the “American Dream”.
