Period # 5 Marilyn Monroe was an American actress, comedienne, singer, and model. She became one of the world's most enduring iconic figures and is remembered both for her winsome embodiment of the Hollywood sex symbol and her tragic personal and professional struggles within the film industry. Marilyn Monroe was born June 1st,1926 in Las Angeles, California. Her birth name was Norma Jeane Mortenson. She had a half sister but they weren’t close. She spent most of her time in and out of foster homes and orphanages because her mom, Gladys Pearl Baker, had devoted physiatric problems and eventually ended up in a mental institution. She first started working in a factory job for a few years while her husband, Dougherty, was overseas serving in the military. While she was there, many photographers came in and took pictures of people at labor. The photographer absolutely loved Monroe’s image and thought she could be big someday. So, June 1945, she left her factory job for a modeling opportunity. Not many people know this but her natural hair color was a reddish brown. At first she was photographed with that color of hair but it wasn’t getting the attention the photographer wanted. Monroe ended up dying her hair the iconic blonde we all remember her for. Since her blonde hair was so bright it was very hard to maintain and keep the color looking good. She got her hair colored ever four to six weeks to maintain it. Her blonde color started to make her get recognized. In June 1946 she arranged a contract with an acting agency. Many people think that she has the perfect face shape, but for her to get there she had gotten plastic surgery on her nose and chin. Although many people think that Monroe was so good at acting and she was such a natural, she actually suffered from pre-performance anxiety. But even with those struggles she still proved her skill by winning various honors and always attracting a large audience to her films. The biggest movie that brought Harlow to fame was Hell’s Angel, a film about a drama that took place during World War I. Another big contributor that helped Harlow’s rise of fame was a man named Howard Hughes, who casted her as the main role in Hell’s Angel. Harlow’s most famous line in the movie was, “Would you be shocked if I changed into something more comfortable?” (Rovi). She was not only recognized for her acting skills and sex appeal, but also her platinum blonde hair.
Ella Josephine Baker was born December 13, 1903 in Norfolk, Virginia (“Who Was Ella Baker?”, 2015). She grew up in North Carolina and developed a passion for social justice after hearing stories from when her grandmother was in slavery (“Who Was Ella Baker?”, 2015). Her grandmother often told her stories of slave revolts and how oppressive life was as a slave (“Who Was Ella Baker?”, 2015). Baker studied at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina and was elected valedictorian when she graduated in 1927 with a degree in sociology (“Who Was Ella Baker?”, 2015). Baker began to cultivate her radical activism by protesting rules and policies of the university that were discriminating (“Who Was Ella Baker?”, 2015).
In 1934, she became the first black woman to star in a major picture in Zouzou. She was very excited that these New York producers came to her and ask her to be in their show. In addition, her determination towards her roles was evident. Even though she was a child, she was still quite outstanding. Many people loved to say she was a “beacon of light and hope” during the Great Depression (Foster 5).
Ella Fitzgerald had a unique style of singing along with crazy vocal abilities. She had a flawless tone,amazing dictation, and grand improvisational skills. Ella had an unusually wide vocal range which she can sing the highest notes and the lowest. She also had the amazing ability to use her voice as an instrument. According to other musicians, Ella was great at phrasing,the way that singers group lyrics and notes.
Shirley Temple was one of the most liked actresses in the world after the Great Depression, lighting up everyone's faces once she appeared on screen. Shirley Temple used her fame as a childhood star to improve society by becoming an activist, an ambassador, and a diplomat for international affairs. Even though her life as an actress was over by the time she was a teenager, her early acting career led to bigger things as she grew into politics. Shirley Temple was born in Santa Monica, California on April 23, 1928 and she passed away on February 10, 2014 in Woodside, California. She was Hollywood’s essential childhood star during the 1930’s and the 1940’s.
Monroe even said herself that her childhood was the thing that inspired her to become an actress. She said that her foster parents often left her at the movie theater for hours. There are many theories as to how Marilyn Monroe left this world. Some say it was suicide/drug overdose, others say it was an accidental death. But one of the theories most spoken about is that she was murdered. Marilyn had an affair with the 35th president, John F. Kennedy. It is believed that when this was happening, she talked a lot about the white house and what went on inside, so people associated with Kennedy wether it be inside or outside of the white house killed her because she knew too much.

When she was in Vogue magazines it helped open the eyes of Americans on what the body standards are, and that if a girl is pretty, they must be skinny. When Marylin showed in the famous magazines that she was not all skinny and perfect it helped the issue of body dysmorphia or when girls are just skinny to feel good about themself or even feel pretty. Marilyn Monroe even made the fashion industry make clothes more comfortable and positive for every body type.
